DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (12-16-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team shot just 28.3 percent from the field while host Embry-Riddle Aeronautical (Fla.) University scorched the nets at a 65.5 percent clip and nailed 20 treys as the Cougars fell 101-57 in the ICI Center on Friday night.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by senior forward Danil Zakhlebnyy and junior guard Ben Severns gave MVNU (5-8) an early 6-0 lead just two possessions into the game.

However, the Cougars would then go the next 7:46 without a field goal as the host Eagles (6-5) went on a 19-1 run to take a 19-7 lead with 10:51 remaining before the half.

MVNU pulled within 23-16 on a 3-pointer by senior guard Robbie Taylor with 7:58 left in the half, but again Embry-Riddle went on a big run as the Eagles went on a 28-6 surge to take a comfortable 51-22 margin to the locker room at the break. The Cougars went just 6-for-26 from the field in the first half (23.1 percent), while Embry-Riddle shot 66.7 percent from the field (18-for-27) including nailing 10-of-14 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc (71.4 percent).

The margin continued to grow in the second half as MVNU's shooting never really heated up. Meanwhile, Embry-Riddle remained red hot especially from long range as the Eagles went 10-for-15 from beyond the arc in the second half (66.7 percent).

Red-shirt freshman Marshall Crumm (right), who joined the Cougars' active roster prior to Friday's game, led MVNU with 12 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting from the field in just 12 minutes of action. Taylor added 10 points as he went 7-for-8 from the free throw line, while Zakhlebnyy and sophomore wing Austin Semple each tossed in eight points with Zakhlebnyy also grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. The Cougars shot 28.3 percent from the field (17-for-60), 25 percent from 3-point range (5-for-20), and 66.7 percent from the free throw line (18-for-27). MVNU did hold a 19-8 edge in offensive rebounds and only committed 11 turnovers.

Jeremiah Applin paced Embry-Riddle with 23 points off the bench as he went 7-for-7 from 3-point range. Blake Touchard nailed five treys and finished with 19 points, while Ray Graham and Billy Serle tossed in 16 and 15 points respectively. The Eagles shot 65.5 percent from the field (36-for-55), went 20-for-29 from 3-point range (69 percent) to finish just one trey shy of the school record for makes, and hit 9-of-16 free throw attempts (56.3 percent).

"Tonight, we struggled to finish the shots we have typically made and (Embry-Riddle) found a great rhythm," said MVNU coach Matt Moore. "We did a nice job of rebounding at the offensive end and did a very good job of not turning the ball over."

"We are looking forward to a little break and then we'll come back for two more opportunities to get tuned up for conference," Moore added.

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, December 28, when they will travel to the University of Akron-Wayne for a non-conference game that will tip off at 7 p.m.
