NORTH CANTON, Ohio (2-16-2010) - NAIA
Division II No. 1 Walsh University held the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
basketball team to its second-lowest scoring
total in the program’s 42-year history as
the Cavaliers posted a 73-40 American
Mideast Conference victory in Alumni Arena
on Tuesday night.
The visiting Cougars (11-16, 3-11 AMC)
started the game well by matching Walsh
(26-2, 14-1 AMC) basket for basket and
holding a 10-8 lead after a basket by junior
guard Brandon Short (left) at the 11:56 mark.
However, the Cavaliers kicked things into
gear at the point as Walsh closed the half
on a 29-10 run to take a comfortable 37-20
lead to the locker room at the break.
Senior forward Kyle Harden led MVNU in the
first half with six points off the bench,
while senior center Bryce Sanborn added five
points and five rebounds. The Cougars shot
32 percent from the field (8-for-25), missed
all four of their three point attempts, and
hit on 4-of-8 free throw attempts.
Ricky Jackson paced the Cavaliers with 12
points and five rebounds in the first half,
while Jeremy Shardo added eight points.
Walsh shot 45.2 percent from the field
(14-for-31), 30 percent from three-point
range (3-for-10), and 54.5 percent from the
free throw line (6-for-11). The Cavaliers
also held a 26-13 rebounding advantage.
The second half was all Walsh as the
Cavaliers got a basket by Jackson to start
the second half and never held a lead
smaller than 19 points the rest of the way
as they cruised to the 73-40 victory to run
their winning streak to seven straight as
they notched their nation-leading 26th win.
Walsh has also now won 34 straight games at
home.
MVNU was led by Short with 11 points off the
bench in his first game back from injury
since February 4. Harden finished with a
career-high eight points, while Sanborn
grabbed eight rebounds to go with five
points. Junior guard Brady Swanson and
sophomore post Jordan Heatherly also scored
six points apiece. The Cougars shot just
28.3 percent from the field (15-for-53) and
missed all 10 of their three-point attempts
after nailing a season-high 10 treys on
Saturday at Cedarville University. MVNU also
went 10-for-16 at the free throw line (62.5
percent).
The 40 points scored was the second-lowest
total ever for the Cougars trailing only the
36 points scored in the 36-33 win over
Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) University on
November 30, 1973, in the infamous slow-down
game in the pre-shot clock era.
Jackson finished with a double-double of 25
points and 10 rebounds to lead Walsh, while
Kenny Kornowski and Shardo added 15 and 10
points respectively. The Cavaliers, who
out-rebounded MVNU 51-24, shot 50 percent
from the field (28-for-56), 21.4 percent
from three-point range (3-for-14), and 60.9
percent from the free throw line
(14-for-23).
MVNU will look to snap its four-game losing
streak with a pair of home games to close
out the season starting with an AMC game on
Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Shawnee State
University.
