The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s basketball team shook off
the rust of a 20-day layoff and rallied from
a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat
Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) 82-74
in the first round of the Hope (Mich.)
College Holiday Classic on Friday evening.
The
first half was a game of runs as
Purdue-North Central (3-10) got things
started with a 7-2 start to the game. After
the Cougars (10-0), who are ranked seventh
in the latest NAIA Division II poll,
answered with a 10-2 run to move in front
12-9, the Panthers responded by scoring 10
straight points of their own to take a 19-12
advantage at the 10:59 mark.
A pair of three-pointers by junior guard
Dan Borcherdt (left) capped
off an 11-0 spurt by MVNU as the Cougars
regained the lead 23-19. However,
Purdue-North Central answered with a 16-2
surge to build a 35-25 cushion with 3:46
left in the half. Then, for the remainder of
the half, the teams traded baskets as the
Panthers took a 43-33 lead to the locker
room at the break.
Borcherdt led MVNU with nine points in
the first half as he went 3-for-3 from
beyond the arc. Junior guard Ben Falkenberg
and senior post Connor Gregg added six
points apiece, while freshman guard Brandon
Short provided a spark off the bench with
five points. The Cougars shot 43.3 percent
from the field (13-for-30), 42.9 percent
from three-point range (6-for-14), and went
1-for-2 at the free throw line. MVNU also
committed eight turnovers in the first half
and was out-rebounded 22-12 including 10-5
on the offensive end.
Marlon Douglass led Purdue-North Central
with 17 points off the bench in the first
half as he went 6-for-8 from the field
including 3-for-4 from three-point range.
Terry Polk added 10 points, while Sylvester
James tossed in seven points. Adam
Dobrzeniecki grabbed seven rebounds to lead
the Panthers, who shot 50.0 percent from the
field (17-for-34), 55.6 percent from
three-point range (5-for-9), and a perfect
4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Purdue-North
Central picked up where it left off in the
first half as the Panthers out-scored the
Cougars 7-2 to start the second half to
build their biggest lead of the game 50-35
on a jumper by James with 17:49 remaining in
the contest.
However, with its back against the wall,
MVNU finally started to click on all
cylinders. Falkenberg (right)
started a quick 8-0 surge with back-to-back
three-pointers and then tossed a half-court
lob to Gregg for his second of three dunks
on the night as the Cougars pulled within
50-43 with 16:03 left.
With Purdue-North Central leading 56-46,
MVNU rattled off 15 straight points to take
a 61-56 lead with 9:24 to go. Falkenberg
nailed a trio of treys and Borcherdt bagged
another one, while junior forward Jadin
Thomas made a jumper and sophomore post
Bryce Sanborn went 1-for-2 at the free throw
line to fuel the surge.
The Cougars’ lead grew to as much as six
points on two occasions including 70-64
following a three-point play by Thomas with
5:35 still on the clock.
The Panthers still had one more run in
them, though, as Dobrzeniecki, James, and
Polk each made a basket to knot the score at
70-70 with 3:09 to play.
Thomas
(left), who was shooting just
57.6 percent from the free throw line,
nailed a pair of free throws with 2:52 to
play to put MVNU back on top. Following a
pair of missed free throws by Polk at the
2:34 mark, Falkenberg nailed his sixth
three-pointer of the half and eighth of the
game to push the Cougars’ lead to 75-70 with
2:23 remaining.
From that point on, MVNU went 7-for-8 at
the free throw line, while Purdue-North
Central went 1-for-5 from the field and
1-for-3 at the free throw line as the final
score of 82-74 also represented the Cougars’
biggest lead of the game.
“Obviously, we looked like two different
teams from the first half to the second,”
said MVNU head coach Scott Flemming. “I was
very disappointed with our focus and effort
in the first half. On the other hand, we
gathered ourselves and played much better in
the second 20 minutes. We picked up our
defensive intensity and started making them
earn their shots. Our half-court execution
was a key as well.”
“In the second half, we did a much better
job of setting screens to get our guys
open,” Flemming added. “This was the
difference with Ben’s shots in the second
half. When he’s open, he can really knock
them down. I also thought that Brandon came
up big defensively. He matched up really
well with their team. Dan also hit some big
shots for us, and Jadin and Connor did a
good job inside.”
Falkenberg finished with a game-high 29
points including 23 in the second half to
lead the way for MVNU. He went 8-for-17 from
three-point range to equal the school record
for most three-point attempts in a game that
was set previously by both Ehren Hull and
Phil Argento. He also added four assists and
played all 40 minutes.
Borcherdt,
who played all but 25 seconds of the game,
finished with 16 points and a game-high six
assists as he went 4-for-5 from three-point
range. Thomas added 14 points including 12
in the second half and grabbed a team-high
five rebounds, while Gregg finished with 12
points and four rebounds. Short
(right) tallied five points, four
assists, three rebounds, and two steals off
the bench, and Sanborn and junior wing Andy
Francis both scored three points apiece with
Sanborn grabbing three rebounds. The Cougars
shot 49.1 percent from the field for the
game (27-for-55), 51.9 percent from
three-point range (14-for-27), and 82.4
percent from the free throw line
(14-for-17).
Douglass finished with 21 points to pace
the Panthers with only four points coming
after halftime. James added 14 points, while
Dobrzeniecki posted a double-double with 13
points and 12 rebounds. Polk also registered
12 points and eight rebounds, while Brian
Bogus tossed in nine points with four
assists. Purdue-North Central shot 47.5
percent from the field (29-for-61), 50.0
percent from three-point range (8-for-16),
and 61.5 percent from the free throw line
(8-for-13). The Panthers also had a
commanding 40-22 rebounding advantage
including 16-5 on the offensive end.
MVNU will take on host Hope (7-2) in the
championship game of the tournament on
Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Flying Dutchmen,
who are ranked eighth in the latest NCAA
Division III poll, defeated Grace Bible
(Mich.) College 97-48 in Friday’s other
first-round contest.
“This will be a really good test for our
team,” said Flemming. “We were really hoping
to get a chance to come up and play them.
They have been one of the top NCAA Division
III teams for a long time and have a great
following in the local community. This will
be a tough game for us on the road and
should go a long way in helping to prepare
us for the upcoming conference schedule.”
