The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
golf team struggled in its opening
tournament of the spring as the Cougars
finished 16th out of 17 teams at the
Southeastern Kentucky Intercollegiate
Invitational held at Crooked Creek Golf Club
on Monday and Tuesday.Malone University,
which is ranked No. 5 in the latest NAIA
poll, won the two-day event with a
nine-over-par 585 to finish 16 strokes ahead
of runner-up and host University of the
Cumberlands (601). Lindsey Wilson (Ky.)
College was third at 607, while Indiana
Wesleyan University placed fourth at 612.
MVNU posted a two-day total of 661 to finish
76 strokes off the pace set by the champion
Pioneers.
Individually, Justin Lower of Malone
earned medalist honors with a four-under-par
140 for the two day event to finish five
strikes ahead of Austin Conroy from Indiana
Wesleyan and Matt Krogstad from Cedarville.
The Cougars were led by senior Jared
Schlabach with a 162, while sophomore Alex
Carroll was right behind at 163. Sophomore
Jay Ruffner carded a 166, and senior Tyler
Tinch registered a 170. Senior Matt Kerns
rounded out the scoring with 178.
MVNU will return to action on Friday and
Saturday at the Capital University
Invitational held at Foxfire Golf Course in
Lockbourne, Ohio.
