The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s golf team finished fifth
out of nine teams at the Ohio Dominican
University/Otterbein College Invitational
held at Cumberland Trail Golf Course on
Friday and Saturday as the Cougars got their
2008-2009 season under way.
Ohio Dominican
won the event with a two-day total of 597 to
edge both Otterbein and Cedarville
University (607) by 10 strokes. Walsh
University was fourth at 619, while MVNU
finished fifth at 623. After the first day
of action, the Cougars were in second place
at 301 - 10 strokes behind Ohio Dominican,
but a team total of 322 on the second day
took MVNU out of title contention.
Danny Sorgini and Kurtis Goff of Ohio
Dominican and Heath Trabue of Otterbein all
tied individually with a 147 with Sorgini
winning medalist honors in a playoff.
Sophomore Jay Ruffner (left) paced the Cougars with
a 149 with an even-par 72 on the first day
to finish in a tie for sixth place overall.
Senior Tyler Tinch shot a 154, while
sophomore Alex Carroll finished with a 155.
Freshman Mitch Justice carded a 165 in his
first collegiate tournament, and freshman
Adam Nichols registered a 181 to round out
the scoring.
"This is the first year where I am not
quite sure what to expect from our team,”
said MVNU coach Mark Stiverson. "We have two
veteran players (Tinch and senior Jared
Schlabach), but the rest of the team is made
up of sophomores and freshmen with little or
no collegiate tournament experience. Heading
into our first tournament, there was even
less predictability as Jared was injured and
could not play. To my delight, the team
handled the rainy first day very well. A 301
was a great score for the conditions and our
team. Obviously, that gave the team some
high hopes as they were in second place
after day one.”
"We were all looking forward to day two
as the weather was much nicer and it is a
good feeling knowing that you are in second
place and playing in the last group,” said
Stiverson. "By playing in the last group,
you can tell how well you are doing by the
end of the tournament. We knew that if we
beat one of the teams in our group more than
likely we would hold on to second place.
Unfortunately, day two of the tournament was
not very friendly to our team. Execution is
always critical around the green, but we
could not seem to find the hole in a
reasonable amount of strokes. We squandered
our second place by not capitalizing on our
strengths. In the end, teams came out of
nowhere and passed us.”
MVNU will return to action this Friday
and Saturday at the Malone College Fall
Invitational held at Tannenhauf Golf Course.
The team’s performance in this event will
help decide whether the Cougars qualify for
the National Christian College Athletic
Association National Tournament in Panama
City Beach, Florida, on October 13-14.
"While our tournament result was
disappointing this weekend, it did show us
where we could be with more practice and
focus,” said Stiverson. "We only have one
more match before the final selection is
made for the NCCAA’s. If we can shoot in the
low 600s this weekend, we will have a good
shot in making it.”
