On a day when the weather
conditions were nowhere near ideal, the
Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s golf
team finished third out of five schools
after the first day of action at the MVNU
Invitational held at Chapel Hill Golf Course
on Monday. (The second round slated
for Tuesday was eventually canceled due to
even colder temperatures and snow on the
course).
With
temperatures hovering right around the
freezing mark mixed in with sleet, snow, and
rain, Ohio Dominican University took the
lead after the first day of action as the
Panthers posted a team total of 321. The
University of Northwestern Ohio was second
at 334, while MVNU came in third at 336.
Muskingum College (343) and Walsh University
(360) rounded out the team scoring.
Individually, Kurtis Goff, an at-large
performer for Ohio Dominican, posted the low
round of the day with a four-over-par 76.
Senior Tyler Tinch (left) led the Cougars with an
83, while sophomore Jay Ruffner and senior
Jared Schlabach. Sophomore Corey Palmer
turned in an 85, and sophomore Alex Carroll
was forced to withdraw from the tournament
after suffering an undisclosed knee injury.
Four other MVNU players also participated as
at-large individuals with senior Matt Kerns
and freshman Mitch Justice both carding
identical 86s. Freshmen Patrick Freeh and
Adam Nichols also carded a 102 and a 107
respectively.
The Cougars will be back in action on
April 17-18 when the team will compete in
the Malone University Invitational held at
Tannehauf Golf Course in Alliance, Ohio.
