The Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s golf team finished sixth
out of 11 teams at the Cedarville University
Invitational held on Monday and Tuesday at
the Beavercreek Golf Course and the Country
Club of the North.
The
University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) won the
two-day tournament with a team total of 610
to easily out-distance runner-up Huntington
(Ind.) University (625) and host and
third-place finisher Cedarville (632).
Indiana Institute of Technology (641) and
Cornerstone (Mich.) University (649) rounded
out the top five with MVNU coming in sixth
at 652.
Individually, Pierre Carlsson of
Cumberlands earned medalist honors as he
carded a two-day, five-over-par 149 to edge
Cedarville’s Matt Krogstad by one stroke.
Senior Jared Schlabach (left)
led the Cougars and was tied for tenth place
overall at 158, while senior Tyler Tinch
carded a 161. Sophomore Jay Ruffner (164),
senior Matt Kerns (171), and sophomore Cory
Palmer (183) rounded out the scoring for
MVNU.
“We ended the regular season on a good
note,” said MVNU coach Mark Stiverson. “The
last day total of 313 was our best of the
spring season while playing in terrible golf
weather. I am really proud of these guys
grinding out their shots and posting a
decent score. I think that will give them a
little boost for the upcoming conference
tournament. This has been a season full of
injuries, winter weather, and unlucky
breaks. All is not lost, though, as we have
one more chance to pull things together.
And, I think we will.”
The Cougars will return to action on
April 30-May 1 when the team will take part
in the American Mideast Conference
Tournament at Apple Valley Golf Course.
