Despite not being able to get outside to
practice due to the winter weather in
central Ohio, the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s golf team won its first
tournament of the spring season as the
Cougars claimed the seven-team Union (Ky.)
College Spring Invitational title on Tuesday
at Wasioto Winds Golf Course.
MVNU,
which fired a 304 on Monday to build a
five-stroke lead after the first round, shot
a 155 on Tuesday as the event was shortened
to just a 27-hole tournament due to rain.
The Cougars’ 459 was six shots better than
runner up Walters State (Tenn.) Community
College. The University of the Cumberlands
(Ky.) was third at 470, while Tennessee
Wesleyan College took fourth place at 472.
Individually, senior Tim Hepner
(left) earned medalist honors for
MVNU as he shot an even-par 108 that
included a one-under-par 35 on Tuesday. He
finished five strokes ahead of both Ben
Carter of Spalding (Ky.) University and Luke
Fullen of Walters State, who each shot a
113.
Juniors Tyler Tinch and Jared Schlabach
each shot a 117 for the Cougars, while
senior Preston Knight fired a 120. Senior
Anthony Savage rounded out the scoring with
a 125.
MVNU will now prepare for a week of
practice rounds in Brookville, Florida, at
World Woods Golf Center. The Cougars will
return to action on March 27-28 at the
Southeastern Kentucky Intercollegiate
Invitational held at Crooked Creek Golf Club
in London, Kentucky.
