The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s
golf team finished fifth out of seven teams
at the Malone College Invitational held at
Tannenhauf Golf Course on Friday and
Saturday.
The
host Pioneers, who are ranked No. 16 in the
latest NAIA poll, fired a tournament-record
572 to easily out-distance the field and
claim the tournament title as they finished
four strokes under par as a team. Hope
(Mich.) College was second at 591, Ohio
Dominican University was third at 597, and
Walsh University was fourth at 610. The
Cougars rounded out the top five with a 611.
Malone’s Justin Lower earned medalist
honors as he tied the tournament record with
a four-under-par 140. Tommy Yamaoka of Hope
was runner-up with a two-under-par 142 that
included a course-record seven-under-par 65
on Saturday.
Junior Matt Kerns (left)
continued to play well as he led MVNU by
firing a 150. Junior Tyler Tinch shot a
151, and senior Preston Knight and junior
Jared Schlabach each carded a 156. Freshman
Jay Ruffner rounded out the scoring with a
165.
The Cougars will now take part in the
American Mideast Conference/NAIA Region IX
Tournament at Apple Valley Golf Course on
Thursday and Friday. The winner of the
tournament will receive an automatic berth
into the NAIA National Tournament in
Plymouth, Indiana, on May 13-16.
