Despite having two freshmen
playing in their first tournaments with the
varsity squad, the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men’s golf team finished second
out of 11 teams at the Capital University
Invitational that was held on Friday and
Saturday at Foxfire Golf Club.
Ohio
Dominican University won the two-day event
with a 616. The Cougars carded a 626 and
moved up from fourth place after the first
day into second place at the completion of
play. Walsh University was third at 631,
while host Capital was fourth at 638.
Individually, Zack Koinis of Heidelberg
College earned medalist honors with a
four-over-par 148 to edge out Mike Ott of
Capital, who finished with a 150. Senior
Preston Knight (left) and
freshman Alex Carroll, who was playing in
only his second collegiate tournament, both
shot a 154 to finish tied for sixth overall
to lead MVNU. Junior Tyler Tinch carded a
159, freshman Jay Ruffner fired a 160, and
junior Jared Schlabach rounded out the
scoring with a 169.
The Cougars will return to action next
Friday and Saturday when they will host
their own MVNU Invitational at Apple Valley
Golf Course.
