Throughout the course of the 2009-2010 season,
MVNU junior Jay Ruffner will write a weekly blog about what is
happening with the team. "Closing
out the Regular Season" (posted on
April 22, 2010)
Well, let us recap our last three
tournaments! Foxfire, Tannenhauf and
Beavercreek/CCN.
Foxfire was in good shape, everything but
the greens. The green were incredibly slow -
I could not believe it. It was hard to get
the speed of the greens because of this. You
do not feel right having to take what feels
like a full swing at a ten-foot putt.
Nevertheless, I thought the course was in
good shape overall. I played probably my
best tournament of the year from tee to
green. I believe I hit 26 of 36 fairways. My
putting on the other hand, was awful. I have
never had less confidence in my putter. It
is sickening. I used to never miss three
footers now I feel like I am lucky to make
them. As always, the weather was cold. I
wish we could wear shorts just one time when
we play! Well, on the bright side, it did
not rain...
Next, we moseyed on up to Tannenhauf. This
is always a fun tournament. The first day,
we got some good weather up until about my
14th hole when Mother Nature just let loose.
We took off for the clubhouse, but we were
not quick enough. We were caught in a
parallel rain that turned into hail the size
of Peanut M&M’s. It was ridiculous and I
think my hand still hurts from being hit by
it! However, on the bright side, I was not
on the back of the cart like my playing
partners, they were absolutely soaked and
pelted by the hail. When we got in the
clubhouse, Brandon Wengerd took off his
shoes and could wring out his socks like
they had been underwater for an hour. It was
hilarious. We had a good time that day as we
all went to see a movie together. And then,
it happened, the shopping cart incident. We
were walking from our hotel to a gas station
to pick up some drinks and food and I see a
shopping cart and yell "WENGERD! Get in that
cart! I’ll push you around!” So, naively, he
hopes in. I start pushing him as fast as I
can towards a curb with grass, little did I
know there was deadly pothole waiting for
us. We drill the pothole and Brandon goes
flying, the cart flies up and the handle
drills me right in the throat while the
bottom takes out my knee. Hilarious, we were
all dying laughing. It was a fun end to the
night. The next day it was FREEZING! It
snowed my first 3 or 4 holes! But my swing
felt great as I started my range routine. I
hit the ball the best I have all year and
shot 79. I was so disappointed. I do not
know what I am doing wrong, but I will
figure it out by conference.
Our next tournament, ugh, Beavercreek. I
HATE this course; I just think it’s so
gimmicky. It is as if the architect, Fuzzy
Zoeller, just threw together a course with
7-mile walks in between. It is BRUTAL! I
took a ten on the second hole of the first
day and I was completely shot from that
point on. I kept telling myself, you can
come back, you can play well coming in, but
I had just lost my confidence and it
effected the next two days. I recorded my
worst collegiate tournament. I cannot
believe how bad this year has gone for me
especially after playing the best golf of my
life this last summer. Let us hope it turns
around by conference. I think it will. We
have been practicing hard, we have to have
our breakthrough sometime soon...
(Sorry to those who read regularly, if any,
for the delay, class, golf and work have
been unbelievably busy!)
