GAMBIER, Ohio (9-1-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's and women's cross country teams got a final tune-up for the 2011 season as both teams took part in an unscored four-team event hosted by Kenyon College on Thursday evening.

In the women's four-kilometer race, freshman Lincoln Green had a great showing for the Lady Cougars as she finished 13th out of 41 runners in a time of 16:30. Jenn Willett of Kenyon was the overall winner in a time of 15:30 to edge out Denison University's Ani Mutafova (15:34) and Michelle Clark (15:36). Sophomore Lindsey Minor also had a strong showing for MVNU as she came in 18th in 17:02, while senior Caitlin Edwards (17:32), junior Brittany Richter (18:06), sophomore Alex Reasoner (18:11), freshman Rebecca Haught (18:43), junior Melissa Keiser (18:51), sophomore Kathleen Finley (21:42), and sophomore Katie Worthington (23:25) rounded out the finishers for the Lady Cougars.

"I was pleasantly surprised by the way the women's team finished the race tonight," said MVNU coach Chip Wilson. "I knew that we could have a solid group of runners, and they showed me tonight that they are a competitive group that has a great deal of potential. My goal now is to shrink the gap from our 1-5 runners to better our team score. I was most impressed by the strength that I saw in these girls throughout this race. Each of our runners had a strong finish."

In the men's five-kilometer race, senior Nate Winters finished seventh out of 47 runners in 17:17 to lead the Cougars. Brent Martin, an unattached runner, won the race in 16:10 to edge out Denison's Dee Salukombo, who finished in 16:15. Sophomore Jace Wolford was just behind Winters in 11th place in 17:34, while freshman C.J. Larue (19:08), senior Kevin Poast (19:35), junior Mark Rednour (19:59), freshman Chris Rednour (20:04), sophomore Mitch McKenzie (21:22), senior Chad Lawver (21:23), junior Anthony Lee (21:34), and junior Jacob Pessia (22:04) rounded out the finishers for MVNU.

"The men's team showed some promise tonight, but the main thing we will need to work on is the depth," said Wilson. "We will need some of our guys to step up and stay closer to Nate and Jace. After watching this race, I am convinced that we have runners with the potential to be up there. Now, it's just a matter of continuing to work hard and improve. I am encouraged by the effort I saw in this group tonight. They are all working hard, and I am anxious to see where we can go from here."

Both MVNU teams will return to action on September 10 when they take part in the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational. The men's race is slated to start at 10:30 a.m. with the women's race to follow at 11:30 a.m.
