CEDARVILLE, Ohio (11-13-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's and women's cross country teams closed out their season at the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship as the Lady Cougars finished 13th out of 21 teams and the Cougars came in 15th out of 28 teams in races hosted by Cedarville University at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course on Saturday.

"Preparing for a cross country season can only be understood by the runners who are involved,” said MVNU coach Chip Wilson. "It is a time-consuming effort that only allows for a few opportunities to actually compete and see what you are made of. Watching my runners put it all on the line in this final race made me think about all their hard work throughout this season and their summer running. I was very proud of each runner and the effort that I saw.”

In the women's race, Malone University (46 points) narrowly edged runner-up Indiana Wesleyan University (51 points) to capture the NCCAA national title. Colorado Christian University (128 points), Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.) University (145 points), and Trinity Christian (Ill.) College (190 points) rounded out the top five, while MVNU posted its best finish in its five years at the event with 303 points to finish 13th.

Meghan Gilmore of Palm Beach Atlantic won the individual national title as she finished with a time of 17:33.5 to easily out-distance runner-up Cassidy Wagner of Indiana Wesleyan (18:26.0) by nearly a minute. Sophomore Jessica Brant covered the five-kilometer course in 20:13.3 to lead the Lady Cougars as she finished 42nd out of 148 runners. Freshman Abby Spitler (20:26.7, 44th), junior Caitlin Campbell (20:39.6, 54th), Alex Reasoner (21:17.3, 75th), sophomore Melissa Keiser (22:49.1, 105th), sophomore Bethany Parks (23:14.6, 112th), and freshman Katie Worthington (24:08.1, 125th) rounded out the finishers for MVNU.

"The women's team has made great strides this season, and that is due largely to the overall effort this team has displayed,” Wilson said. "I am blessed to have great leadership on this team, and I know the girls want to get better. We only had eight girls this season, but they were all competitive and we were constantly running solid team times and finishing well as a team. I am very excited for the future with this team!”

In the men's race, Cedarville (60 points) held off Indiana Wesleyan (72 points) to claim the NCCAA national title. Trinity Christian (110 points), defending champion Malone (124 points), and North Central (Wis.) University (165 points) rounded out the top five, while the Cougars were 15th out of 28 teams with 379 points.

T.J. Badertscher of Cedarville claimed the individual national title with a time of 26:08.9 to edge runner-up Mitch Williams of Malone (26:21.8) by almost 13 seconds. Junior Nate Winters covered the eight-kilometer course in 27:04.0 to lead the Cougars as he finished 14th out of 186 runners. Freshman Jace Wolford (28:58.7, 69th), junior Chaz Rice (29:54.1, 100th), junior Kevin Poast (29:55.8, 102nd), freshman Sebastian Rue (30:12.8, 110th), senior David Clark (30:26.9, 115th), and sophomore Jacob Pessia (30:56.5, 129th) rounded out the finishers for MVNU.

"The men's race gave us some excitement on Saturday when I saw Nate blast off the line and run with the lead pack for most the first part of the race,” said Wilson. "When he crossed the line, he earned an NCCAA Second Team All-American honor that he deserved. He has worked hard for this honor, and I am very proud of his efforts. I was proud of all the guys, but especially David. He is our only senior this year and watching him cross the line one final time was a bittersweet feeling for me. I have greatly enjoyed his attitude and work ethic, and I think he will leave behind these traits for the younger guys.”
