CEDARVILLE, Ohio (10-1-2010) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's and women's cross country teams both finished 33rd in their respective races at the All-Ohio Invitational hosted by Cedarville University on Friday afternoon.

"It doesn't get much better in the sport of cross country than when you have the opportunity to run against some of the best competition in the nation on a beautiful afternoon,” said MVNU coach Chip Wilson. "These were the conditions we saw before us when we stepped off the bus at Cedarville for the All-Ohio championship. This is a special race because almost every university in the state is represented. Sometimes for a school our size, it can be intimidating to run against this type of competition, but I repeatedly reminded our runners this week that we belong in this race and that we needed to focus on our race and not those around us. Based on how we performed this afternoon, I think we did stay focused on our own goals.”

In the women's race, Miami University of Ohio won the 39-team event by finishing with 43 points to easily outdistance runner up University of Dayton (92 points) and third-place Ohio University (103 points). Malone University was the top non-NCAA Division I school with a seventh-place finish with 214 points, and the Lady Cougars finished 33rd with 991 points.

Individually, Rachel Patterson of Miami of Ohio won the women's five-kilometer race in a time of 17:12.3 to edge Dayton's Maura Bulgrin (17:19.0) by more than six seconds. Freshman Abby Spitler led MVNU by finishing 124th out of 277 runners in 19:39.8 to broke her own school record of 19:48.9 set two races ago at the Walsh University Invitational. Freshman Alex Reasoner posted a new personal best by finishing 193rd in 20:46.8, while sophomore Jessica Brant was right behind her (20:58.1, 206th). Junior Caitlin Campbell (21:50.5, 229th), sophomore Melissa Keiser (22:53.2, 251st), sophomore Amy Chappell (23:12.8, 256th), and sophomore Bethany Parks (23:19.6, 259th) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Cougars with Parks also setting a new personal best.

"I was impressed once again by the improvements I saw today for many of the women's runners,” said Wilson. "Abby is continuing to lower the school record mark she set a few weeks ago with her time today, and Alex is continuing to become a stronger runner with her performance. The girls are starting to develop a great pack with our No. 2-4 runners and No. 5-7 runners, and it is encouraging to see them run competitively.”

In the men's race, Miami of Ohio made it a clean sweep as the RedHawks won the 37-team event with 82 points to beat out runner-up Xavier University (119 points), Ohio (123 points), Dayton (126 points), and the University of Cincinnati (134 points). Shawnee State University was the top non-NCAA Division I school with a sixth-place finish with 151 points, and the Cougars finished 33rd with 1008 points.

Individually, Chris Lemon of Dayton covered the eight-kilometer course in 24:11.8 to win the title as he nipped runner-up Eric Finan of Cincinnati (24:20.6) by almost nine seconds. Junior Nate Winters was the top finisher for MVNU as he came in 152nd out of 263 runners in 27:23.6. Freshman Jace Wolford was next in 28:02.5 as he finished 176th, and freshman Sebastian Rue posted a new personal best time of 29:57.5 as he finished 230th. Junior Kevin Poast (29:58.7, 231st), senior David Clark (30:03.5, 234th), sophomore Jacob Pessia (30:27.5, 238th), and sophomore Mark Rednour (32:34.5, 249th) rounded out the scoring with Pessia knocking 43 seconds of his previous personal best.

"The men's team performed well this afternoon with a few of the guys breaking their own personal record,” said Wilson. "Sebastian and Jacob both ran solid races today and they were rewarded with a personal best time. Nate and Jace are continuing to run strong in the lead pack for us, and we look to rest a little on this off-week as we prepare for our next meet.”

The MVNU teams will be back in action on October 15 when they travel to the Wilmington College Invitational. The women's race will start at 4:30 p.m. with the men's race to follow at 5 p.m.
