Throughout the course of the 2011 season, MVNU senior runner Nate Winters will write a weekly blog about what is happening with the team.

"Who Let the Dog Out?" (posted on September 20, 2011)

I don't know what it is about dogs and runners, but for some reason, the dogs don't like us. We had just turned off of Pleasant Street, when we made a most unpleasant discovery. The dog that lived in the house we were running past did not like runners, and he was not on a leash.

I think that it's important that I stop the story for a moment, to add that I knew there was a dog at this house, because I have run by this house and seen this dog before. However, I was hoping that the dog was inside, and, since there were ten of us, I felt safe running by this house.

But the feeling of safety went away as the dog charged across the yard, barking like crazy and looking very crazy. Some of us barked back. The dog only ran to the edge of the yard, but all of us ran cautiously past just in case he decided he was hungry.

This week, we were able to run more because we didn't have a race. Instead of doing our typical 4Xmile workout on Tuesday, coach gave us a hill route to run. Hills are called "speed work in disguise", because they can really get your heart pounding and your body tired, but you aren't running that fast. We also did some more sessions of Chip Ripper X abs. Our abs are hurting now, but they will be looking good very soon.

We only had one dangerous run for the entire week and on Friday, we got to play ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate Frisbee is probably the most fun you can have as a runner, and I look forward to those Fridays when we can end practice early and go play and exercise at the same time.

This weekend we are at Otterbein. Usually, Otterbein is a fairly fast course, so we are all excited to run some fast times. Hopefully, we aren't running fast because there are dogs chasing us.

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."

"A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more."

Crazy running story: My junior year of track we were running at Johnstown; the 4x800; I was the 2nd leg and the guy handing off to me stepped on the back of my shoe spike while I was taking off. My heel was completely out of the shoe as I took a couple steps, so I just kicked the shoe off. I ran the two laps and felt my foot pounding on the track and throbbing, then went numb. I ran a 2:09 that race and we ended up winning. My foot hurt so bad, some people on the team noticed but some did not.
