MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-26-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University baseball team
honored its five seniors in style on
Thursday afternoon as the Cougars swept a
Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader
from Grace (Ind.) College by the scores of
7-6 and 10-0.

In the first game, it was the visiting
Lancers (14-31, 11-23 MCC) that got off to
the good early start when they took a 2-0
lead in the top of the first inning on an
RBI triple by Nate Wottring and a sacrifice
fly by Josh Petry.
MVNU (30-18, 21-13
MCC) answered with three runs in the bottom
of the second inning to go in front 3-2 with
all three runs coming with two outs. A full
swing chopper off the bat of senior Jeff
Estep got the rally started with two outs as
he hustled out the hit that traveled less
than 15 feet from home plate. Freshman
catcher Clint Spencer followed with an RBI
single, and sophomore outfielder Sean
Fleming capped the inning off with a two-run
single up the middle.
After Grace
plated two runs in the top of the third
inning to take a 4-3 lead, the Cougars
bounced right back with two runs over their
own in the bottom of the inning as freshman
outfielder Jake Dickerson had an RBI double
and freshman infielder Sterling Harpst laced
a run-scoring single to put MVNU on top 5-4.
A throwing error on the Lancers gave the
Cougars an insurance run in the bottom of
the fourth inning and the score remained 6-4
in favor of MVNU until the top of the
seventh inning.
With two outs in the
top of the seventh inning, the Lancers
mounted a comeback to tie the game at 6-6 as
a wild pitch plated the first run and a
throwing error allowed the second run to
score.
However, in the bottom of the
seventh inning, the Cougars got runners on
first and second with two outs. Sophomore
first baseman Seth Eller followed with a
double down the rightfield line to give MVNU
a 7-6 walk-off win.
Sophomore
right-hander Mike Kochheiser started and
worked six-plus innings as he scattered
seven hits, two walks, and six runs with
three strikeouts. Estep (3-2) picked up the
win in relief as he did not allow a hit or a
walk in his one inning of work that included
one strikeout.
Dellos Schabel (0-1)
took the loss for the Lancers as he allowed
14 hits, two walks, and seven runs over 6.2
innings with two strikeouts.
Offensively, Spencer went 3-for-3, while
Fleming, Dickerson, and sophomore third
baseman Jeff Stone each had two hits.
Wottring paced Grace with two hits.
The second game was all MVNU as the Cougars
scored five times in the bottom of the first
inning and then tacked on one run in the
bottom of the second inning and two runs in
both the third and fourth innings on the way
to a 10-0 victory.
Eller, Stone,
Dickerson, Doherty, and freshman outfielder
Andrew Fila each had two hits in the game
for MVNU with Stone driving in three runs
and Doherty and Spencer plating two runs
each.
Meanwhile, a pair of senior
pitchers was getting the job done on the
mound for MVNU. Right-hander Darren Athey
(4-1) started and worked the first five
innings as he allowed just three hits and
three walks while striking out three
batters. Right-hander Jerrob Decker tossed
the final two innings and retired all six
batters he faced with two coming via
strikeouts.
Michael Reitz (0-2) took
the loss for Grace as he allowed 12 hits and
10 runs over four innings with two
strikeouts. Jordan Wodetzki tossed the final
two innings and registered one strikeout.
Offensively, the Lancers collected just
three hits with Brent Easterday going
2-for-3. Grace strand nine base runners in
the game compared to just three for MVNU.
The Cougars, who reached the 30-win mark
for the sixth straight season and the 17th
time overall in Coach Keith Veale's 23 years
guiding the team, will close out the regular
season on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grace with
another MCC doubleheader. MVNU is currently
in third place with both Spring Arbor
(Mich.) University and Huntington (Ind.)
University just a game back. The five-team
MCC Tournament will get under way next week
at the regular-season champion.
