2003 Baseball Game-by-Game Recaps
May 13, OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY The Cougars managed
just two hits in the second championship game of the NAIA Region
IX Tournament as MVNU fell 5-0 to Ohio Dominican to finish as the
NAIA Region IX Tournament runner-up for the fourth straight
year. Derek Morey (5-3) suffered the loss as he allowed
eight hits, one walk, and five runs over nine innings with three
strikeouts. The Cougars managed just singles by Carl Langley
and Adam Rowe and walks to Kyle Peters and Justin Clarey as their

May 13, OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY After several days of rainouts,
MVNU dropped a close 6-4 decision to Ohio Dominican in the first championship
game of the NAIA Region IX Tournament which was played in Mount Vernon.
The Panthers, ranked 17th in the final NAIA national poll, built a 6-1 lead and
held off a ninth-inning rally by the Cougars. Adam Rowe (5-4) suffered the
loss on the mound as he allowed 11 hits, two walks, and six runs over 6 1/3
innings with six strikeouts. Ryan Lucas tossed the final 1 2/3 innings and
gave up just one hit with three strikeouts. Offensively, Dan Matheney led

May 8, vs. Point Park (PA) College The Cougars advanced to the
championship game of the NAIA Region IX Tournament for the fourth straight year
as MVNU pulled out an 8-7 victory in 10 innings over Point Park in the winner's
bracket championship game in Chillicothe, Ohio. Dan Matheney singled in the
winning run in the top of the tenth inning after Tim Martini had thrown out the
potential winning run at home plate in the bottom of the ninth inning. Andy Dunn (3-2) picked up the victory
in relief as he worked the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit and one
walk. Ryan Lucas started and lasted just 1 1/3 innings as he gave up one hit, five
walks, and four runs with one strikeout. Carl Langley tossed seven innings in relief
and allowed four hits, five walks, and three runs with four strikeouts. Offensively,
Josh Sichina had two hits including a three-run homer in the first inning. Justin

May 8, vs. Malone College Despite trailing 2-0 after the first
inning, MVNU
rebounded to eliminate Malone from the NAIA Region IX Tournament in Chillicothe,
Ohio, with a 7-3 victory. Derek Morey (5-2) worked all nine innings on the
mound to record his fourth straight victory for the Cougars as he allowed just
seven hits and three runs - only one earned - over nine innings with no walks
and three strikeouts. Meanwhile, the MVNU offense pounded out 10 hits with
Justin Clarey leading the way with a double, a single, and two RBI. Ty

May 7, vs. Tiffin University The Cougars successfully opened up
play at the NAIA Region IX Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio, as MVNU blanked
Tiffin 2-0. Adam Rowe (5-3) worked all nine innings for the Cougars in
posting his second shutout of the year. He struck out 11 batters and
allowed just four hits and four walks. Meanwhile, MVNU scored its two
runs on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly by Nate Rutkowski and an eighth-inning
sacrifice fly by Josh Sichina. Kyle Peters also had two of the Cougars'

May 3, POINT PARK (PA) COLLEGE MVNU wrapped up its
first-ever American Mideast Conference North Division title and
the top seed at the NAIA Region IX Tournament with an 11-1 victory
over Point Park in the second game of a division twinbill.

strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Cougars pounded out 14 hits with

straight game as he worked six strong innings and allowed just

Andy Dunn tossed the final inning and recorded one strikeout. Meanwhile,
Josh Sichina paced the offense by going 5-for-5 with a grand slam
and a career-high seven RBI - one shy of the school record. Nate Rutkowski also hit his first home run of the

with a 3-1 victory over Saint Vincent in the nightcap of an American Mideast
Conference North Division twinbill. Derek Morey (2-2) started and pitched

one unearned run to go with three strikeouts. Jon Barchus notched the school-record
13th save of his career as he pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts.

a tough 3-2 decision as Saint Vincent scored three times in the
bottom of the seventh inning off reliever Andy Dunn (2-2) to pull

Conference North Division doubleheader. Dunn took the loss
as he gave up three hits, two walks, and three unearned runs over
the final 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Ryan Lucas
started and pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings as he scattered seven

the game with a home run for the Cougars and later doubled and

April 22, GENEVA (PA) COLLEGE The Cougars rallied with two runs in
the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 2-1 victory over Geneva in the second
game of an American Mideast Conference North Division doubleheader. Tim
Martini's sacrifice fly knotted the score, and Josh Sichina won the game with an
RBI-single to center. Jon Barchus (8-0) was outstanding on the mound as he
allowed just three hits, one walk, and one unearned run over seven innings with

first inning, MVNU scored two runs in each of its first three at
bats to go in front for good. Carl Langley (1-2) earned
the victory as he allowed just five hits, one walk, and one earned
run over 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Adam Rowe
notched his first save of the season as he worked the final 1 1/3
inning and allowed just one hit with one strikeout.
