The Cougars posted their first win of the season with a 9-2 victory over Illinois Tech at the Gene Cusic Classic. Josh Sichina paced the offense with a first-inning grand slam as he went 2-for-3 with five runs batted in. Scott Crawford was also 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. MVNC opened up the 2001 by dropping an 11-10 decision to Illinois Tech at the Gene Cusic Classic. Mike Waddell (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound as he gave up nine hits, six walks, and 11 runs in 4 1/3 innings. Jon Barchus tossed the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed just three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
