Rachel Widener and Darcee Hoberg, two members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College women's volleyball team, were honored recently when the 1999 NAIA Region IX First and Second Teams were announced.
Widener, a senior outside hitter from Elyria, Ohio, was named to the NAIA Region IX First Team after she led the Lady Cougars with 617 digs and a .343 attack percentage. The former All-Ohioan at Open Door Christian Academy also posted 32 aces, 51 assists, 102 blocks, and 474 kills. In addition, Widener set a new school record by compiling a .955 serve reception percentage.
Hoberg, a sophomore outside hitter from Coshocton, Ohio, was selected to the NAIA Region IX Second Team. The former All-Ohioan at River View High School pounded a team-high 493 kills in 1999. Hoberg also recorded 28 assists, 42 aces, 62 blocks, and 538 digs.
MVNC finished the 1999 season with a 44-5 overall record. The Lady Cougars won the American Mideast Conference regular-season and tournament title as well as advancing to the championship match of the NAIA Region IX Tournament.
