The Mount Vernon Nazarene College men's basketball team has added another guard to its roster for the 2000-2001 season with the addition of Chip Wilson.
Wilson, a 5-foot-9 point guard from Marion, Ohio, was a Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference First Team and an All-District Second Team selection after averaging 12.9 points, 6.0 assists, and 5.8 steals as a senior at River Valley High School. Wilson also holds the school record for most steals in a game with 12 and highest career free throw percentage at 81 percent.
"Chip is the kind of young man we love to have in our program," said MVNC head coach Scott Flemming. "He is a fine basketball player and an outstanding person. He will give us depth at the point guard position. He is a very good perimeter shooter, and he does the little things to make him a solid point guard."
In addition to playing basketball, Wilson excelled in both track and cross country as he earned MOAC First Team honors in both sports. He was also selected as an MOAC Scholar-Athlete all four years at River Valley, and he was a Wendy's Heisman Award nominee as a senior.
"I am choosing MVNC because this is a place where I can not only further my basketball career and get an excellent education, but I can also be surrounded by Christian people," said Wilson of his college choice. "MVNC is like many other colleges in that you can get a good education. The thing that makes it stand out from other colleges is that it has a great atmosphere. You feel welcome when you are on campus. Also, from what I have experienced and heard, the faculty members and coaching staff are excellent in their field."
The Cougars finished the 1999-2000 season with a 26-8 overall record marking the fourth straight season that the team has topped the 20-win mark. MVNC also advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament for the third year in a row.
