
Mike Waddell, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College baseball team, has been selected as the American Mideast Conference, the National Christian College Athletic Association, and the NAIA National Pitcher of the Week for his efforts during the week of April 24-30.
Waddell, a junior righthander from Cardington, Ohio, began the week with a four-hitter against Tiffin University as the Cougars prevailed 5-0. Besides the four hits, he allowed three walks while striking out nine Dragon batters.
Later in the week, Waddell tossed his second straight shutout and his third of the season as he blanked Geneva (PA) College 3-0. The former Cardington-Lincoln High School standout allowed just two hits and a walk, and he fanned 10 Golden Tornado batters.
For the week, Waddell allowed just six hits and four walks in 14 scoreless innings of work. He also struck out 19 batters, while holding the opposition to just a .125 batting average.
On the season, Waddell has posted a 6-2 record with a team-best 2.55 earned run average. He is also leading the AMC in strikeouts per nine innings at 11.21. In 53 innings of work, he has 66 strikeouts and just 21 walks.
MVNC is currently 23-16 overall and 12-8 in the AMC. The Cougars will return to action on Thursday when the team will host Point Park (PA) College in another conference twinbill that is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
