Three members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College baseball team were recently honored when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Team was announced.
Mike Waddell, a junior right-handed pitcher from Cardington, Ohio, was the top pitcher selected to the All-Region Team. The former Cardington-Lincoln High School standout has posted a 6-3 record with a 2.59 earned run average. In 59 innings of work, Waddell has struck out 71 batters and issued just 21 walks.
Andy Heimbach, a senior right-handed pitcher from Wheelersburg, Ohio, joined Waddell as one of the pitchers on the All-Region Team. The former All-Ohioan at Wheelersburg High School has posted a 5-2 record with a 3.99 ERA. In 49 2/3 innings of work, Heimbach has struck out 59 batters and issued 25 walks.
Eddie Wright, a junior outfielder from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was selected as the top outfielder on the All-Region Team. The former Mount Vernon High School star leads the Cougars with a .395 batting average. Wright has compiled 45 hits, two doubles, a team-high five triples, two home runs, 25 RBI, 33 runs scored, and a team-high 18 stolen bases.
Head coach Keith Veale was also chosen as the NCCAA East Region Coach of the Year by his peers. Veale has guided MVNC to a 26-18 overall record so far this season and a 14-8 American Mideast Conference mark.
The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday when the team will travel to Walsh University for the NAIA Region IX Tournament. MVNC, the fourth seed, will face third-seeded Ohio Dominican College at 1:00 p.m. in the six-team double elimination event.
