The Mount Vernon Nazarene College women's basketball team has signed its first recruit for the 2000-2001 season, and the Lady Cougars did not have to look far to find her.

Head coach Steve Gregory recently landed Lisa Beaver, a standout center from Mount Vernon High School, who has decided to further her education and continue her basketball career at MVNC.

Beaver, a native of Mount Vernon, Ohio, is currently averaging 12.1 points and 9.3 rebound per game for the Lady Jackets. She is also shooting 54.7 percent from the field (58-of-106) for MVHS, which is currently 10-7 overall and 8-2 in the Ohio Capital Conference.

Last season, Beaver was selected to the All-OCC First Team and the District 22 Second Team. She was also named an Honorable Mention All-Ohioan.

"Lisa is a great addition to our program," said Gregory. "I am delighted that she is signing on to play in Mount Vernon for four more years. I think that it is a great fit not only for her, but also for the community to be able to follow her through her college career."

"She is a very gifted player and we are going to utilize her to the fullest," Gregory added. "I expect that over the next few years she is going to be one of the top players in our conference. A lot of the other schools were recruiting her as well, so we all feel that she is a very talented player."

"MVNC is a great college and the people are great, too," said Beaver when asked about her college choice. "Coach Gregory understands and knows a lot about the game of basketball, and I like how he coaches. The team has also made me feel welcome."

"It is also nice to know that I can go home whenever I want to," Beaver added. "Plus, my family can come and see me play all my games."

MVNC is currently 13-11 overall and 7-8 in the American Mideast Conference. The Lady Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, February 8, when the team will travel to Ohio Dominican College for a conference game that will tip off at 6:00 p.m.
