   The Mount Vernon Nazarene College men's golf team got its fall season under way on Tuesday as the Cougars took part in the 1998 National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament at the Arbor Hills Country Club.

   After the first round of action at the two-day event, MVNC found itself in 11th place out of 15 teams as the Cougars compiled a team total of 340 on the par-72 course. Spring Arbor (MI) College, the host school and defending tournament champion, leads the pack with a 301. Malone College is a close second at 304, while the next closest team is Southern Wesleyan (SC) University at 320.

   Individually, Kyle Chin of Indiana Wesleyan University leads everyone after firing an even par 72. Josh Moses, Cumberland (KY) College - 73, Brandon Mills, Malone - 74, Dave Page, Spring Arbor - 74, and Dan Page, Spring Arbor - 75, round out the top five individual scores.

   Freshman Sam McGraw had the top finish among the Cougar golfers as he fired an 83 in his first collegiate tournament. Matt Durst shot an 85, while Steven Hesson, Chris Huff, and Todd Mazur each carded an 86.

   The second and final round of the tournament will be played on Wednesday.
