"Aldrich Named NCCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week"

   Shelly Aldrich, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College women’s basketball team, has been named the National Christian College Athletic Association National Player of the Week for her efforts in games during the week of November 2-8.

   Aldrich, a 5-foot-7 junior guard from Marion, Ohio, led the Lady Cougars to a pair of victories and the championship of the 1998 Lady Cougar Tip-off Tournament.

   In a 94-83 overtime victory against Bethel (IN) College, the former Marion Harding High School standout scored a career-high 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field that included a 4-for-7 showing from behind the three-point arc. She also grabbed two rebounds, dished out four assists, and recorded two steals.

   In a 67-63 victory over Taylor (IN) University in the championship game, Aldrich tied her career high set the previous night with 23 points. She was 3-for-7 from the field and nailed her only three-point attempt. She was also 16-for-18 at the free throw line. She grabbed four rebounds, dished out one assist, and recorded three steals.

   For the tournament, Aldrich was 9-for-17 from the field (53 percent), 5-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc (63 percent), and 23-for-31 at the charity stripe (74 percent) as she was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

   MVNC is currently 2-1 overall. The Lady Cougars will return to action on Friday, November 20, when the team will face Roberts Wesleyan (NY) College in the 1998 NCCAA Roundball Classic in Rochester, New York.
