Four members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College women’s fastpitch softball team were recently honored when the American Mideast Conference awards were announced.
Amanda Schumm, a freshman pitcher/designated hitter from Rockford, Ohio, was selected to the AMC First Team after leading the Lady Cougars in nearly every offensive category. The former Parkway High School All-Ohioan batted .408 with 49 hits, nine doubles, two triples, five home runs, 29 runs scored and 29 runs batted in. Schumm was also 6-10 on the mound with an outstanding 1.61 earned run average. She struck out 67 batters in 104 2/3 innings of work.
Lori Sours, a senior infielder from Jeromesville, Ohio, was named to the AMC Second Team after batting .225 with 23 hits, five doubles, one triple, 10 RBI, and 10 runs scored. The former Hillsdale High School star, who began the year at first base, showed her versatility by playing second and third base due to several MVNC injuries.
Shelly Claxon, a sophomore shortstop from Wheelersburg, Ohio, received Honorable Mention from the AMC coaches. The former South Webster High School product batted .319 with 30 hits, three doubles, 11 RBI, and 12 runs scored.
Mandi Halley, a junior outfielder from Ashville, Ohio, was named to the AMC All-Academic Team. The former Teays Valley High School player has 3.928 grade point average as an Elementary Education major. She batted .235 for the season with 19 hits, one double, seven RBI, and six runs scored.
