
The Mount Vernon Nazarene College athletic department honored its softball, golf, and baseball teams with a banquet in the MVNC cafeteria on Monday night.
The women's fastpitch softball team selected freshman pitcher/designated hitter Amanda Schumm as the team's Most Valuable Player, while senior infielder Corri Tillett was chosen as the Cougar Award recipient.
Schumm led the Lady Cougars in nearly every offensive category including a .408 batting average with five home runs and 29 runs batted in. Tillett batted .212 and led the team with 15 sacrifice bunts while also providing the team with leadership on and off the field.
The golf team selected sophomore Matt Durst as its Most Valuable Player, while freshman Todd Mazur was named the Cougar Award recipient.
Durst led the team all season despite playing the second half of the season with an injured hand. Mazur saw significant action in his first season of collegiate golf.
Freshman Matt Alison, an outfielder on the baseball team, was also selected as the Cougar Sports Associates "Freshman of the Year" as he has posted a .317 batting average with 23 RBI and 22 runs scored so far this season. The rest of the baseball awards will be announced once the team finishes its season.
