With the start of the first season of women’s soccer still two months away, Mount Vernon Nazarene College head coach Jonathan Meade has added another talented player to his roster as he has signed Jessica Shirer from Alabaster, Alabama.
Shirer, who was named an Honorable Mention All-State player following her senior season, set three school records at Thompson High School. She scored three goals in a match three different times. She also set the single-season scoring mark with 18 goals as a junior and finished with a record-setting 27 career goals in just two years.
"I am excited to have Jessica sign with us," said Meade, who will be making his collegiate head coaching debut in 1999 as he guides the Lady Cougars. "She has good speed and agility that will be a definite asset for us on the outside. She is a hard worker and is the type of player who comes off the field physically exhausted letting everyone know that she has given it her all."
In addition to her soccer achievements, Shirer was named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students. She also received the Outstanding Creative Foods Student Achievement Award.
"MVNC struck me as a very sound Christian college and the atmosphere on campus proves that," said Shirer. "I feel that I will benefit greatly while attending MVNC. Not only has the spirit on campus drawn me there, but also the beautiful surroundings. It is a beautiful campus in every way."
Shirer will join Kelly Evans from Big Walnut High School and Anna Davis from Mount Vernon High School as the first three recruits for the inaugural women’s soccer team at MVNC. The Lady Cougars will compete as a club sport during the 1999 season and then move to varsity status in the fall of 2000.
