Todd Sands, a member of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College men’s basketball team, has been selected as the American Mideast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for his performance in games during the week of December 14-20.
Sands, a 6-foot-7 senior center from Centerburg, Ohio, led the Cougars, ranked #1 in NAIA Division II, to a pair of AMC victories. The former Centerburg High School standout scored 20 points, including the game-winning basket with 2.6 seconds left, in a 75-73 victory over NAIA Division I #22 University of Rio Grande. He also tallied 18 points during a 94-62 victory at Walsh University.
For the week, Sands made 18-of-21 field goal attempts for 85.7 percent and also hit 2-of-4 free throw attempts. He added 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one blocked shot. This is the second time this season that he has received the weekly AMC honor.
MVNC is currently 11-0 overall and 2-0 in the AMC. The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, December 30, when the team will take part in the Concordia University Holiday Invitational in Irvine, California. MVNC will face the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the first round of the tournament at 10:00 p.m. EST.
