Tammy Custer, a member of the MVNC women's volleyball team, has been named the Mid-Ohio Conference and National Christian College Athletic Association Volleyball Player of the Week for her performances in matches played during the week of October 6-12.
Custer, a 5-foot-8 senior outside hitter from Convoy, Ohio, led the Lady Cougars to a 4-2 week that included a 3-1 showing at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Invitational. Six of the top ten teams in the Great Lakes region competed in the 13-team tournament.
The former Crestview High School standout opened the week with 17 kills, 20 digs, and three aces in a five-game loss at Malone College. She followed that performance with eight kills, four blocks, two aces, and 13 digs in a win over Cedarville College.
Custer pounded 19 kills and recorded 18 digs and three aces as MVNC fell in four games to Taylor (IN) University, ranked 17th in the NAIA national poll, in the opening match of the tournament. Against Purdue-Calumet (IN) University, she posted nine kills in the victory. She added 15 kills and 13 digs in a win over Spring Arbor (MI) College. She rounded out the tournament by hitting .455 with 12 kills, eight digs, and four aces in a win over host Michigan-Dearborn, ranked fourth in the region.
During the week, Custer became the Lady Cougars' career leader in serve attempts and now has 2,164, passing the previous mark of 2,143 set by Jodi Webb (1992-95). Custer also moved into sixth place on the MVNC career kills list with 1,127.
The Lady Cougars are currently 26-5 overall and 9-2 in the MOC. MVNC jumped from eighth to sixth in this week's NAIA Great Lakes region poll.
