Mount Vernon Nazarene College teammates Sean Barrett and Brian Sheets were named to the 1998 National Christian College Athletic Association All-National Tournament for their efforts as the Cougars finished third out of ten teams at this year's event.
Barrett, a senior outfielder from Brookville, Ohio, closed out his outstanding career as he batted .366 over four games. He was 4-for-11 with three runs batted, one double, one stolen base, and one sacrifice fly. He also gunned down the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 3-2 win over Indiana Wesleyan University.
Sheets, a sophomore third baseman from Vermilion, Ohio, posted an incredible .636 batting average in four games at the tournament. He was 7-for-11 with three runs batted in, three doubles, and two runs scored.
MVNC finished its season with an outstanding 37-12 mark. The Cougars were the Mid-Ohio Conference regular-season and tournament champions, and the team also advanced to the semifinals of both the NAIA Great Lakes Region Tournament and the NCCAA National Tournament.
