Scott Flemming, the head coach of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College men's basketball team, was recently selected as the 1998 NAIA Division II National Coach of the Year.
Flemming, who recently completed his eighth season at MVNC, led the Cougars to a school-record 27-7 overall mark during the 1997-98 campaign. MVNC won its first-ever Mid-Ohio Conference regular-season title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II National Tournament. The Cougars also achieved their highest NAIA national ranking ever by finishing the season ranked third in NAIA Division II.
Flemming also claimed MOC Coach of the Year honors in 1998 as he led the team to its fine season despite not having a senior on the roster. Under his leadership and guidance, the talented junior class has blossomed from a 9-21 mark as freshmen to a 24-8 mark as sophomores to this season's successful 27-7 campaign.
After eight seasons at MVNC, Flemming has compiled a 140-116 overall mark (.547 winning percentage). He is the all-time winningest coach in Cougar basketball history.
