St. Ignatius Soccer Standout Signs with
MVNU
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-4-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
has signed an important recruit for the 2012
season as the Cougars have signed Preston
Spurrier, who will look to further his
education and continue his soccer career at
MVNU.
Spurrier,
a midfielder/forward from Cleveland, Ohio,
was a member of the Cleveland St. Ignatius
High School team that won back-to-back state
titles his junior and senior year and was
the national high school champion in 2010.
For his efforts on the field, Spurrier was
named to the All-Northeast Ohio District
Team and the All-Sun Newspaper Team.
"We are very excited to welcome Preston to
the MVNU soccer family," said coach Andrew
Belleman, who is rounding out his first
recruiting class as he heads into his second
season leading the team in 2012. "Preston
comes to us as a potential game-changing
player. He has great footwork, vision, and
creativity with the ball. He has the ability
to impact the game and our program from the
moment he steps on the field. He is a great
fit for the program and for the institution.
We are looking forward to working with him
and seeing him grow as a player and person
at MVNU."
In addition to play soccer
at St. Ignatius, Spurrier has played 10
years of club soccer for the Cleveland
Whitecaps. He has also been a part of the
Northern Ohio Alliance Select Team for four
years, HOS Futsal Team for three years, and
CASA for three years.
"There are
several reasons why I chose MVNU," said
Spurrier of his college choice. "I like
Coach Belleman and the soccer squad as well
as the university community and the strong
academics."
The Cougars posted a
7-11-1 overall record in 2011 and posted a
3-6 Mid-Central College Conference mark.
