Lady Cougars Sign Highland Volleyball
Standout
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-25-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team has signed an important
recruit for the 2012 season with the
addition of Shayla Pierce, who has decided
to further her education at MVNU and
continue her volleyball career with the Lady
Cougars.
Pierce,
a 5-foot-8 setter from Marengo, Ohio, helped
Highland High School to the Mid-Ohio
Athletic Conference title and a district
runner-up finish as a senior as she compiled
80 kills, 34 blocks, 44 aces, 154 digs, and
767 assists in 26 matches. For her efforts,
she was named to the MOAC First Team and the
All-Central District Second Team in 2011.
"Shayla is a high quality player who
will make a positive contribution to our
competitive balance next year," said MVNU
coach Paul Swanson, who is the NAIA's
all-time wins leader (976) and has a 961-335
record in 28 years with the Lady Cougars.
"She is a very fine setter with lots of
potential. She is also an excellent athlete
who can compete at other positions such as
outside hitter and right-side hitter. Our
team is looking forward to Shayla coming.
She has a great personality and will fit in
well."
In addition to playing
volleyball at Highland and club volleyball
for CVA Volleymasters for four years, Pierce
was a member of the Highland softball team
that finished as the regional runner-up in
2010 and she was an MOAC Honorable Mention
pick in 2011. She was active in student
council, served as the Business
Professionals of America secretary, and was
named both the winter homecoming queen and
the prom queen her senior year.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU," said Pierce of her college choice. "I
like the small campus atmosphere along with
the strong academics the school offers. I'm
excited to join the volleyball team and have
a successful career at MVNU."
MVNU
finished the 2011 season with a 13-23
overall record as the Lady Cougars competed
in the Mid-Central College Conference for
the first season.
