Four Lady Cougars Garner NCCAA East Region Accolades

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (3-13-2012) - Four members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team were recently honored for their performances during the 2011-2012 season when the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region awards were announced.

Sierra Fletcher, a senior guard from Utica, Ohio, was named to the NCCAA East Region First Team. The former Utica High School star leads the Lady Cougars in scoring (13.3 ppg), assists (106), steals (90), 3-pointers made (59), and minutes played (29.2). She has also grabbed 115 rebounds and is shooting 34.1 percent from 3-point range (59-for-173) and 79.9 percent from the free throw line (119-for-149).
   
Sierra Fletcher Alexis Harkins

Alexis Harkins, a senior forward from Canal Fulton, Ohio, joined Fletcher on the NCCAA East Region First Team. The former Northwest High School standout is averaging 12.2 points and 5.8 rebounds while being the top free throw shooter in all of NAIA Division II at 89.6 percent (86-for-96). She has also recorded 32 assists, 35 steals, and started all 30 games along with Fletcher.

Whitney Levering, a senior post from Fredericktown, Ohio, was an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention selection. The former Fredericktown High School product is averaging 9.4 points and a team-best 6.3 rebounds to go along with a season total of 29 assists, 20 blocked shots, and 32 steals so far. She also shoots 72 percent at the free throw line (36-for-50).
   
Whitney Levering Amy Daniels

Amy Daniels, a sophomore post from Marion, Ohio, joined Levering as an NCCAA East Region Honorable Mention pick. The former Marion Pleasant High School graduate is averaging 8.6 points and 5.4 rebounds and leads the team by hitting 46.5 percent of her field goal attempts (101-for-217). She has also recorded 27 assists, 33 steals, and eight blocked shots while shooting 78.1 percent from the charity stripe (50-for-64).

MVNU is currently 17-13 overall. The Lady Cougars, who captured the NCCAA East Region title, are the No. 6 seed at the NCCAA National Tournament that will tip off with eight teams on Wednesday at Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind. MVNU will face No. 3 seed Bluefield (Va.) College in the first round at 1:45 p.m. The two teams met once during the regular season with the Lady Cougars dropping a 67-66 decision in the Physical Education Center on December 10.
