MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (2-20-2012) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team has signed an important recruit for the 2012 season as Lydia Simpson has decided to further her education and continue her soccer career at MVNU.

Simpson, a defender from Chillicothe, Ohio, started 58 matches in her career at Unioto High School and compiled 20 goals and 12 assists while helping the team post 19 shutouts. She was a two-time captain and two-time team Most Valuable Player. After earning Southwest District Division II Second Team honors as a junior, she was named to the Southwest District Division II First Team as a senior. She will join high school teammate Morgan Gumm in the MVNU 2012 recruiting class.

"We are excited that Lydia has chosen to continue her academic and athletic careers as a Lady Cougar," said MVNU coach Daniel Seiffert, who has guided MVNU to a 37-23-6 record the past three season and a berth in either the NAIA National Tournament or the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament each year. "She is a quality student-athlete who has exhibited strong performances both on the field and in the classroom. She has a great heart for the Lord, and her care and concern for others is quite evident. These qualities, coupled with the servant leadership skills that she's acquired through all of her various high school and club soccer activities, make her a terrific fit for our program."

"Although Lydia is primarily a central defender, she has the qualities and abilities to play anywhere on the field," Seiffert added. "She has very good pace and she uses it well to either shut down attackers defensively or to push up into the attack. Her goal and assist production while playing primarily on the defensive side of the ball testifies to her versatility as a sound, all-around player. We are looking forward to all that God has planned for her as part of our team and our university community."

In addition to playing soccer at Unioto, she has played club soccer for First Capital FC and Ohio Galaxies FC Elite. She has been involved in Discipleship (youth group), Science Club, and National Honor Society as well as being on the A-B Honor Roll all four years of high school. She has served as the junior and senior class secretary and also as a volunteer at Adena Regional Medical Center.

"It is difficult to pick out reasons why I liked or chose MVNU because I pretty much couldn't find anything I didn't like," said Simpson of her college choice. "If I had to name a few, I love the calm atmosphere of the campus and how friendly and helpful the students and staff were. The chapel was just beautiful. I also felt extremely comfortable around Coach Seiffert and the team. They were very, very welcoming, and even though I wasn't part of their team family (yet), they made me feel like they were genuinely happy that I was there and were truly interested in getting to know me. Basically, MVNU was a perfect fit for me."

The Lady Cougars posted a 12-9-2 overall record in 2011 and advanced to the championship game of the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament. They also claimed third place at the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
