Cougars Sign Edison High School Baseball
Standout
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (12-3-2011) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University baseball team has
already landed a recruit for the 2013
baseball season with the signing of Greg
Stagani prior to his senior season at Edison
High School.
Stagani,
a pitcher/first baseman from Richmond, Ohio,
posted an 8-1 record with a 0.73 ERA and 82
strikeouts in 66.1 innings as a junior at
Edison. He also batted .394 with seven
doubles, 16 runs scored, and 15 RBI. For his
efforts, he was named to the Ohio Valley
Athletic Conference First Team, the Eastern
District First Team, the Buckeye 8 First
Team, the Wheeling Intelligencer All-Valley
First Team, and an Honorable Mention
All-Ohioan. Stagani has helped to lead
Edison to three sectional titles so far, two
Buckeye 8 championships, one OVAC
championship, one district title, and a trip
to the regional semifinals.
"We are
extremely excited that Greg has decided to
be a part of our university and baseball
program," said MVNU coach Keith Veale, who
has posted a 741-375 record while guiding
the Cougars to seven conference titles, five
National Christian College Athletic
Association national championships, and the
school's only two berths in the NAIA World
Series over the past 22 years. "He has had
an outstanding career at Edison High School
and I am confident he will finish with a
great senior season."
"We saw Greg
throw this summer for the Richmond Legion
team coached by Sam Davis," Veale continued.
"I was impressed with not only his velocity,
but also his ability to throw his off-speed
pitches for strikes. He will have an
opportunity to come in and make an immediate
impact on the mound next year. He has a
great physical foundation to build on and
with some experience early in his career he
will become a recognizable leader on our
pitching staff."
In addition to his
high school numbers, Stagani had an
impressive summer with the Richmond Legion
Post 740 team as he posted a 5-1 record with
a 1.78 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 35.1
innings. He also batted .360 with 10 doubles
and 30 RBI.
"There are several
reasons why I chose MVNU," said Stagani of
his college choice. "I like the small school
setting and the small class sizes. The
university has both a good school reputation
as well as a good athletics reputation. I
also liked the coaches and players. It is a
good academic and athletic environment for
me to succeed in."

The Cougars are coming off a 32-21
season in 2011 in which the team earned its
second straight trip to the NAIA National
Championship Opening Round by winning the
American Mideast Conference Tournament
title. The 2012 season will see MVNU change
conferences with a move to the Mid-Central
College Conference. Over the years, the
Cougars have had 13 players drafted by Major
League Baseball teams including Tim Belcher,
who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1983
draft. Seven other players have signed free
agent contracts to play professional
baseball.
