Three Men's Soccer Players Receive
Capital One Awards

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (12-15-2011) - Three
members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University men's soccer team were named to
the Capital One Academic All-District Team
and one player earned a spot on the Capital
One Academic All-America Third Team when the
awards were recently selected and announced
by the College Sports Information Directors
of America.

Caleb Palumbo, a sophomore defender from
Galena, Ohio, headlined the list for the
Cougars as he was named to the Capital One
Academic All-District Team and the Capital
One Academic All-America Third Team. The
former Worthington Christian School star
started all 19 matches and anchored the back
line that posted five shutouts. He also
registered two assists on the attack. In the
classroom, the biology (pre-medicine) major
has posted a 3.74 grade point average.
Ryan Swartzentruber, a sophomore from
Grove City, Ohio, was the lone goalkeeper
selected to the Capital One Academic
All-District Team. The former Grove City
High School product started 12 matches in
goal for MVNU this season and posted a 1.84
goals against average with 46 saves and
three shutouts. In the classroom, the middle
childhood education major has posted a 3.76
grade point average.
Kyle Maxam, a
senior from Liberty Township, Ohio, was one
of four midfielders named to the Capital One
Academic All-District Team. The former
Lakota West High School standout started all
19 matches for the Cougars and recorded two
assists. In the classroom, the biology
(pre-optometry) major has posted a 3.38
grade point average.
The Capital One
Academic All-District candidates are
nominated by the sports information
directors of their respective schools who
are CoSIDA members and then voted on by all
the district members. The district that MVNU
is in encompasses 15 states along the east
coast as well as Washington D.C. To be
eligible, a student-athlete must be at least
a sophomore in their second year of
attendance at their current school with a
3.30 grade point average or higher. Capital
One Academic All-District First Team
honorees are then eligible for consideration
for one of the three Capital One Academic
All-America Teams.
