MVNU Has School-Record 20 Fall Sports
NAIA Scholar-Athletes

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (12-8-2011) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University fall sports teams
had record success in the classroom as 20
different players were honored when the 2011
fall sports NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards were
announced recently at their respective
national championship events.

Lindsey Shaffer |
Leading the way was the MVNU women's
soccer team which had a record seven players
recognized. Lindsey Shaffer (3.93), Courtney
Ricker (3.92), Erin Washington (3.87), Libby
Kalanquin (3.85), Haley Sparks (3.84), Stacy
Culbertson (3.71), and Amanda Woods (3.52)
were each honored for the Lady Cougars.
The MVNU women's volleyball team had
four players claim the accolades as Gina
Porto (3.85), Lauren Percival (3.74), Paige
Hagans (3.71), and Kaylee Hewitt (3.55) were
each honored.
The MVNU men's cross
country team also had four runners honored
as Anthony Lee (3.81), Jacob Pessia (3.67),
Kevin Poast (3.58), and Nate Winters (3.56)
were each selected.
The MVNU women's
cross country team boasted three runners as
Caitlin Edwards (3.85), Melissa Keiser
(3.66), and Brittany Richter (3.65) where
each chosen, and the MVNU men's soccer team
rounded out the honorees with Jacob Doup
(3.93) and Anthony Bible (3.71) earning the
distinction.
To be eligible for the
NAIA Scholar-Athlete award a student-athlete
must be a junior or senior with a 3.50 grade
point average or higher with at least one
year of attendance at the nominating school.
A year ago, MVNU had 25 players recognized
over the course of the entire school year.
