Lady Cougars to Honor Three Seniors on
Friday
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (4-27-2012) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's fastpitch
softball team will honor its three senior
players between games of the Lady Cougars'
Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader
against Marian (Ind.) University that will
get under way at 3 p.m. at Cougar Field on
Friday.

Meagan Stott, Jenn Gulley, and MacKenzie
Shaw have led MVNU to a 59-80 record over
the past four years that included a 22-17
record in their freshmen season when the
Lady Cougars advanced to the championship
game of the American Mideast Conference
Tournament.
Stott, a pitcher from
Geneva, Ohio, has appeared in 42 games on
the mound for MVNU over the past four years
with 22 starts. The former Geneva High
School product has posted a 2-16 record with
a 5.36 ERA. She has struck out 64 batters in
145 innings of work. This season, she has
posted a 1-5 record with a 7.72 ERA in 45.1
innings of work. In the classroom, she has
posted a 3.84 grade point average and will
be up for NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athlete
honors for the second straight season.
"Several words that describe Meagan are:
leader, competitor, thinker, and
compassionate," said MVNU coach Jeana
Howald. "She has been a spiritual influence
on our team and has led our small group and
community service events. She was born with
determination. No matter what comes her way
or what challenges she faces, she will face
them with determination, courage, and an
inner strength. She has never given up and
has always been ready to take on the next
challenge that comes her way. She has been a
stabilizing force for her Lady Cougar
teammates both spiritually and academically.
She will be greatly missed and we wish her
the best."
Gulley, an
outfielder/first baseman from Lexington,
Ohio, has played in 96 games over the past
four years. The former Lexington High School
standout has posted a .281 batting average
with 13 doubles, two home runs, 21 runs
scored, and 21 RBI. This season, she is
batting .260 with a team-high nine doubles
to go with six RBI and three runs scored.
"Jenn has faced many obstacles as she
has traveled the road as a Lady Cougar,"
said Howald. "From a freshman to now a
senior, she has hit some bumpy roads, but
she has overcome and achieved each of those
challenges. As a player, she has been
willing to sacrifice herself for the good of
the team. When I think of a true teammate,
her name is always at the top. She has given
many, many hours to me and this program, and
she was always willing to help no matter
what was needed. For that, I am truly
thankful and will always be grateful to
her."
Shaw, an outfielder from Mount
Vernon, Ohio, has played in all 139 games
for the Lady Cougars the past four years.
The former Mount Vernon High School star has
posted a .342 career average with 152 hits,
eight doubles, three triples, 31 RBI, 73
runs scored, and 15 stolen bases. She ranks
fifth in school history with 141 career
singles. This season, she leads MVNU with a
.374 batting average to go with four
doubles, two triples, six stolen bases, six
RBI, and 17 runs scored. She has also posted
a 3.47 grade point average in the classroom
and has been nominated for the NCCAA
Scholar-Athlete Team.
"MacKenzie has
been a leader and a strong competitor for
our program on and off the field," said
Howald. "She has developed skills over the
past four years that will make her excellent
teacher and coach. She always puts others
before herself. She is a leader and has
always given her best. Her sense of humor,
infectious smile, and overall presence has
made our program better over the past four
years. In the past 23 years that I have
coached, there is no doubt that she has been
one of my finest players. She epitomizes
Lady Cougar softball and will be greatly
missed."
MVNU is currently 10-25
overall and 3-13 in the MCC. If the Lady
Cougars sweep Marian in Friday's
doubleheader, they will qualify for the
eight-team MCC Tournament.
