Cougar Golfers Set to Tee off Fall Season
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (9-17-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men’s golf team
will hit the links on Friday for the first
time during the 2010-2011 school year when
the Cougars will take part in the two-day
Malone University Invitational that will be
held at Tannenhauf Golf Course in Alliance,
Ohio.
After
posting a 17-68 overall record last year,
MVNU is looking to turn things around
starting with the fall season. Head coach
Mike O’Hara (left), who is
returning to the program for his second
stint leading the Cougars, knows that he has
a challenge in front of him, but he is eager
to get to work with this year’s team.
"I am looking forward to working with this
group of guys,” said O’Hara, who posted a
554-226-5 record from 1996-2002 in his
previous time as MVNU’s men’s golf coach
that included a 12th-place finish out of 27
teams at the 2001 NAIA National
Championship. "We will be very young since
we are adding five freshmen, and I am looking
for strong leadership from senior captain
Jay Ruffner and sophomore co-captain Matt
Crouch. Seniors Cory Palmer and Alex Carroll
have also had a great deal of experience and
should help in leading our freshmen.”
Crouch returns after leading the team as a
freshman with an 80.1 average, while Ruffner
was right behind him at 82.4. Palmer also
carded an 83.9 average, while Carroll is
hoping to return to form after missing all
of last season following knee surgery.
"We are looking for strong play from Jay,”
said O’Hara. "He is a very dedicated worker
and should be one of our top players in the
conference. Matt is another hard worker and
is very consistent. He was our low qualifier
in this fall’s preseason competition. Cory
is an excellent ball striker, who is looking
to have a strong year, and Alex is a proven
performer when healthy.”
Joining the four returning players are five
freshmen – Aaron Hale, Matt Wellman, Drew
Davis, Trent Laws, and Nick Stover. "Aaron will be a solid player for
us,” said O’Hara. "He has great ability and
is very coachable. Matt is very talented. He
works hard and the sky is the limit for him.
I look for Drew to fight for a spot in our
top five as the year goes on, while Trent is
a hard worker who has improved as our fall
has progressed. Nick also has a great worth ethic
and attitude.”
In addition to playing in the Malone
Invitational on September 17-18, the Cougars
will travel to the Campbellsville (Ky.)
University Invitational on September 27-28
and the Cedarville University Invitational
on October 4-5 to wrap up the team’s fall
season. | |
