MVNU Men's Soccer Team to Host First-Knox
Invitational
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (9-2-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
will host the 24th annual First-Knox Cougar
Invitational on Friday and Saturday with two
matches being played each day.
The host Cougars (1-1), who received votes
in the NAIA preseason poll after going
17-7-2 last year, will take on Southeastern
(Fla.) University at 4:00 p.m. on Friday
after opening the season last week on the
road with a 6-0 win at Grace (Ind.) College
and a 3-2 loss at Davenport (Mich.)
University, another team receiving votes in
the preseason poll. Senior defender Kemar
Jackson leads MVNU with three goals through
two matches, while senior forward Cody
Snouffer and junior forward Chris Allen have
two goals apiece with Snouffer adding a
team-high two assists.
The Cougars' first round opponent,
Southeastern, will enter Friday's match with
a 0-0-1 record after battling Webber
International (Fla.) University to a
season-opening draw. The Fire advanced to
the National Christian College Athletic
Association Division II National Tournament
championship match last year where they fell
2-1 in overtime. Southeastern posted a 2-1
victory over MVNU during the 2006 season in
the only other meeting between the two
schools.
The first match on Friday will feature
Judson (Ill.) University taking on Spring
Arbor (Mich.) University at 2:00 p.m. The
Eagles will bring a 2-0 record into the
match after defeating Taylor (Ind.)
University 3-0 and NAIA No. 21 McKendree
(Ill.) University 2-1 in double overtime.
Spring Arbor will enter Friday's match with
an 0-2-1 record after being shutout by NAIA
No. 7 Notre Dame College and NAIA No. 4
University of Rio Grande before battling
Rochester (Mich.) College to a scoreless
double overtime draw.
"We are looking forward to kicking off our
First-Knox Cougar Invitational this
weekend,” said MVNU head coach Paul Furey.
"We are so thankful for our friends over at
First-Knox National Bank for making this
tournament possible and for their generosity
and support over the years. It has just been
a great relationship and we are just so
grateful to Barb Barry and all the great
people there.”
"The tournament should be a very competitive
one,” Furey continued. "Southeastern has
done very well in recent years. It is great
to be able to draw a team from Florida to
come to our tournament. Spring Arbor is
always a very competitive program, and
Judson has a very rich soccer tradition and
comes in with a win over a ranked team
already this year. All in all, it should be
a good weekend of soccer. With the Christian
universities, we once again plan on having a
time to get together and fellowship with the
other teams on Friday night.”
On Saturday, the consolation match of the
tournament will take place at 1:00 p.m. as
the losers from each of Friday's matches
will square off followed by the championship
match at 3:00 p.m. An all-tournament team
will also be announced following the
championship match.
