Lady Cougars Sign Wadsworth All-State
Volleyball Player
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (11-30-2010) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
volleyball team has signed its first recruit
for the 2011 season with the addition of
Julie Bassett, who has decided to further
her education at MVNU and continue her
volleyball career with the Lady Cougars.
Bassett,
a 5-foot-9 outside hitter from Wadsworth,
Ohio, was a two-time All-Ohio selection at
Wadsworth High School, where she was also an
All-Suburban League and All-District
honoree. She helped her team to a district
championship in 2009 and a perfect 14-0
conference mark as the Suburban League
champs in 2010. She set a school record with
487 digs as a senior while also compiling 23
aces, 30 blocks, and 289 kills in 77 sets.
In addition to her other honors, she was the
Cleveland Plain Dealer Player of the Week,
the Medina County Gazette Player of the
Week, and the WAKR AM 1590 Akron Player of
the Week.
"Julie is a high quality person and player
and we are excited to have her join the MVNU
volleyball family,” said MVNU coach Paul
Swanson, who is the NAIA's all-time wins
leader (963) and has a 948-312 record in 27
years with the Lady Cougars. "In Julie, we
are getting the total package – a strong
character person who is excited to come to a
Christian university, an outstanding student
who desires a great education, and an
athletic, experienced, and versatile player.
We think she will have a very positive
influence on our volleyball program on and
off the court.”
In addition to playing volleyball at
Wadsworth, Bassett has played club
volleyball for the Zero Gravity Juniors, the
National Volleyball Academy, and the Elite
Sports Ohio Volleyball Company. She was also
named a scholar-athlete at Wadsworth.
"There are several reasons why I chose
MVNU,” said Bassett of her college choice.
"I like the fact that it is a Christian
college, and I like the location and nice
campus. The school also offers a large
number of available majors. I like how
friendly Coach Swanson, the players, and the
staff are as well.”
MVNU is currently 41-4 overall this season
and will be the No. 2 seed at the 10-team
National Christian College Athletic
Association Tournament that will get under
way with pool play on Thursday and Friday in
Kissimmee, Fla. The Lady Cougars already
captured the American Mideast Conference
regular-season title with a perfect 10-0
mark this year. | |
