MVNU to Add Women's Golf for 2011-2012
Season
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-16-2011) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University athletic
department is pleased to announce the
addition of women's golf to the list of
sports offered by the university starting
immediately with competition in the
2011-2012 school year with men's golf coach
Mike O'Hara assuming the coaching duties.
"I
am excited with the addition of women's golf
to our athletic program,” said Dr. Lanette
Sessink, MVNU's vice president of Student
Development. "This program will not only
assist in the recruitment of female
student-athletes, but it will add a new
dimension to our overall athletic program.
Coach Mike O'Hara (left) has
done an incredible job with our men's golf
team, and we look forward to seeing his
coaching talents expanded with our women's
team. Although it will take a few years to
build the program, I am confident that we
will place our mark in the Mid-Central
College Conference.”
"We are looking forward to adding women's
golf to our athletic program,” said Paul
Swanson, MVNU's athletic director. "The
timing is right to invest in our women's
programs, and we are pleased that Mike will
take over the coaching responsibilities as
well.”
"I am looking forward to the challenge of
starting a women's golf team,” said O'Hara,
who is in his second stint coaching the MVNU
men's golf team and will continue in that
role as well. "I feel it is the right time
with the new conference we have joined
having women's golf. I feel my experience at
(NCAA Division I) Mercer (Ga.) University
with the women's golf program prepared me to
meet this challenge. I have already started
to recruit golfers for the fall season, and
I look forward to fielding our first team
next year.”
The addition of women's golf will give MVNU
11 varsity sports – six for women
(volleyball, soccer, cross country, golf,
basketball, and softball) and five for men
(soccer, cross country, golf, basketball,
and baseball). MVNU will be joining the MCC
for the 2011-2012 season and women's golf
will become a conference championship sport
in 2012-2013 when Indiana Wesleyan
University also adds the program to bring
the number of MCC teams with the sport to
the necessary six teams. | |
