MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (5-26-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team has added an important recruit for the 2011-2012 season as A.J. Mayle has signed a letter of intent to continue his education at MVNU and play for the Cougars.

Mayle, a 6-foot guard from Morgantown, W.V., compiled 1,121 points over three seasons at Trinity Christian High School. He averaged 19.7 points, 4.4 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.1 steals over 57 career games. The three-time Mason-Dixon All-Conference First Team selection was named to the All-State Second Team as a sophomore and junior before landing on the All-State First Team as a senior. He was also one of five players named to the Northern West Virginia All-Area Team by the Dominion Post Newspapers.

"A.J. is an outstanding player with the ability to impact the game in a number of ways,” said MVNU coach Matt Moore, who just wrapped up his second year guiding the Cougars in 2010-2011. "The fact that he is a winner is the first thing that caught my eye. I believe he will be a great addition to our program and that he will be an outstanding teammate.”

"There are several reasons why I chose MVNU,” said Mayle of his college choice. "MVNU seemed like the right place for where I am right now as a player and as a person. I like Coach Moore and he seems to have a great chemistry with his guys, which is appealing to me. I know I will have to start all over again, but that is a challenge that I look forward to.”

MVNU finished the 2010-2011 season with a 16-15 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the highly competitive American Mideast Conference. The team also posted an 11-3 mark in the friendly confines of the Physical Education Center. Over the past 15 seasons, the Cougars have topped the 20-win mark 12 times and have advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament eight times.
