Four Lady Cougars Earn AMC Hoops Honors

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (3-4-2011) - Four members of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team were recently honored when the American Mideast Conference awards were announced following voting by the conference coaches.
   
Amanda Himes Sierra Fletcher

Amanda Himes, a 6-foot-1 senior center from Hilliard, Ohio, highlighted the list for the Lady Cougars as she became the first player in the program's history to be a four-time AMC First Team selection. The former Hilliard Darby High School star, who finished as the runner-up in the AMC Player of the Year voting, leads MVNU and is among the national leaders in scoring (18.3 points per game) and rebounding (11.8 rebounds per game) and has also blocked 31 shots. She is the Lady Cougars' all-time leader in points (2,175), rebounds (1,271), and blocked shots (112).

Sierra Fletcher, a 5-foot-5 junior guard from Utica, Ohio, was named to the AMC Second Team. The former Utica High School standout is averaging 13.1 points and 2.9 rebounds and leads MVNU with 115 assists and 83 steals. In just two seasons with the Lady Cougars, she is eleventh in school history in career assists (258) and eighth in career steals (218). She has also scored 908 points.

Alexis Harkins Lauren Johnson

Alexis Harkins, a 5-foot-10 junior wing from Canal Fulton, Ohio, joined Fletcher on the AMC Second Team. The former Northwest High School product is averaging 11.6 points and 5.9 rebounds and is shooting 89.3 percent from the free throw line (67-for-75). For her career, she has recorded 996 points, 532 rebounds, 127 assists, and 91 steals.

Lauren Johnson, a 5-foot-4 senior guard from Washington Court House, Ohio, was an AMC Honorable Mention pick. The former Miami Trace High School standout is averaging 10.5 points and 1.8 rebounds to go along with 64 assists and 75 steals. She is also second on the team this year with 45 treys. For her career, she has scored 932 points and ranks ninth in school history with 281 assists and fourth with 257 steals.

The Lady Cougars are currently 21-8 overall and finished AMC play with a 10-5 conference mark. MVNU was ranked No. 24 in the final NAIA Division II poll and received an at-large berth into the NAIA Division II National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa. The team will make its first-ever appearance in the 32 team field on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. CST against No. 3 seed Saint Ambrose (Iowa) University (28-4).
