Reading All-State Soccer Player Signs
with MVNU
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (1-11-2011) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team
has signed another important recruit for the
2011 season as the Cougars have landed Kyle
Simpson, who will look to further his
education and continue his soccer career at
MVNU.
Simpson, a midfielder from Reading, Ohio,
registered 14 goals and a school-record 27
assists as a senior at Reading High School.
He was a three-time All-Southwestern Ohio
First Team and All-Cincinnati Hills League
First Team selection, a two-time team Most
Valuable Player and team captain selection,
and earned a spot on the All-Ohio First Team
as a senior after being an All-Ohio Second
Team pick as a junior. He was also named the
CHL Player of the Year as a senior and
selected to the NSCAA All-Region First Team. He ranks among the
all-time leaders in state history in assists
in a game (5) and assists in a season (27),
and he is tied for sixth in state history
with 75 career assists.
"We're very excited about Kyle's decision to
attend MVNU next fall,” said MVNU coach Paul
Furey, who has posted a 252-165-32 overall
record in 21 years with the Cougars. "He is
a quality player who should help us right
away. He has many of the tools to be an
outstanding collegiate player just as he had
a stellar high school career. He is a model
student and citizen and will fit very nicely
into our Christian campus community.”
In addition to playing soccer at Reading,
Simpson has been a member of the Craig
Rhodis-led FOSC-Kolping Premier club team
that was a State Cup finalist in 2010. He
has been a four-year Honor Roll student at
Reading and a Cincinnati Hills League
Scholar-Athlete. He was also a delegate to
Buckeye Boys State in 2010.
MVNU posted a 12-7-2 overall record in 2010
and finished 5-2-1 in American Mideast
Conference play. The Cougars advanced to the
championship match of the National Christian
College Athletic Association East Region
Tournament before falling in a shootout to
Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College.
