Lady Cougars Finish Another Successful Campaign
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (2-10-2011) - The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team put together another successful season in 2010 as the Lady Cougars finished with a 14-8-2 overall record and a 6-4 conference mark and just as many significant achievements off the field.

The season began with a trip to Canada for a pair of exhibition matches against Wilfred Laurier (Ont.) University and York (Ont.) University, a pair of schools ranked in the Canadian Top 10. This helped prepare the Lady Cougars for the competition that awaited them in the regular season.

MVNU rattled off a pair of shutouts before dropping a 2-1 decision to NAIA No. 24 John Brown (Ark.) University. The team bounced back to post five shutout victories in its next six matches with the only loss coming 1-0 in American Mideast Conference play to Notre Dame College.

After a pair of shutout losses at Houghton (N.Y.) College and Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College respectively, the Lady Cougars went 5-1 to close the regular season with five shutouts with the only loss coming 1-0 in double overtime to Cedarville University.

MVNU got revenge over Cedarville in the opening round of the AMC Tournament as the Lady Cougars advanced in a dramatic shootout before falling in the semifinals to regular-season champion Roberts Wesleyan 1-0.

Then, MVNU switched its focus to the National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Tournament where the team defeated Malone University and then Roberts Wesleyan to capture the NCCAA East Region title and earn a trip to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Lady Cougars suffered a tough 4-3 overtime loss to Corban (Ore.) University in the opening round of the NCCAA National Tournament and then fell 2-0 to King (Tenn.) College in the consolation bracket. MVNU closed out the season with a 0-0 draw with Roberts Wesleyan in the fourth meeting of the year between the two teams.

"I couldn't be more proud of our players as they performed in top fashion on the field, in the classroom, and in our community,” said MVNU coach Daniel Seiffert as he wrapped up his second season guiding the team. "They had another terrific year and it all started with each one of them coming into our fall camp ready to hit the ground running. Our pre-season trip to Canada was a great experience for the whole team. While we had a lot of fun, our mettle was also toughened as we played two top teams including one that went on to finish second in the nation.”

"Our players continued to exhibit the ability to overcome adversity throughout the season,” Seiffert continued. "While winning 14 matches and tying the school record with 15 shutouts through a tough conference and non-conference schedule, they showed great resolve. Advancing in the AMC Tournament to the Final Four and winning the NCCAA East Region Tournament against two teams that had beaten us earlier was a testament to their pure grit and determination. The team also put forth a strong overall effort at the NCCAA National Tournament in Florida.”

There were many individual achievements for the Lady Cougars in 2010 and the four seniors on the squad led the way. Forward Jessica Estep wrapped up her outstanding career by leading the team with 13 goals and seven assists as she finished third in school history with 65 career goals and 150 career points and fifth with 20 career assists. Goalkeeper Jenessa Loewen tied the school record with 14 shutouts in the season and set new school records with 37 career shutouts and a 0.92 goals against average. Defender Denče Stentz and forward Jamie Blair were also key contributors as Stentz helped anchor the record-tying back line and Blair had two goals and two assists on the attack.

"We're thankful for another season in which we were blessed in so many ways,” said Seiffert. "Our senior leadership from Jessica, Jenessa, Denče, and Jamie was terrific. I'm looking forward to all God has planned for them as well as each player on our team as we all seek to honor Him in all we do.”

Junior forwards Amanda Woods (4 goals, 4 assists) and Courtney Ricker (5 goals, 1 assist), sophomore forward Jessica Linger (4 goals, 3 assists), and freshman forward Amy Weaver (4 goals) each contributed to the attack along with junior Andrea Fisher (1 goal, 1 assist), and freshman Sara Lipstraw. Meanwhile, junior Challyn Dobson (2 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore Rachel Elder (1 goal, 1 assist) helped control the midfield along with freshman Rachel Coyne (1 goal) and juniors Ashley Smithberger and Sarah Buehler (3 assists). Junior defenders Kelci Rhodes and Heidi Moeckel also did their part to help anchor the defense along with freshmen Rachel Walters and Jackie Mourne, junior Lindsay Shaffer, and sophomore Stacy Culbertson.

Not only did the team perform well on the field, the Lady Cougars were also busy achieving success in the classroom. A program-best six players were named to the NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athlete Teams and the team was also honored with Academic Team Awards by the NCCAA and NSCAA. MVNU was also active in community service as they raised over $2,000 in donations for children in need in Mount Vernon and for cancer victims through their efforts in the "Bigger and Better” campaign and their "Kick Cancer” game.

"We are all so thankful for all of the terrific support that we have received from our parents, families, faculty, administration, and the MVNU community,” said Seiffert. "Having this support means so much to our team and we are very appreciative.”
