Final Home Game
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (2-18-2011) - The Mount
Vernon Nazarene University women's
basketball team will honor its five seniors
on Saturday afternoon prior to the Lady
Cougars' final regular-season home game
against Malone University that will tip off
at 2 p.m.
Leah Williams, Kelli Pollock, Kellie Jokela,
Lauren Johnson, and Amanda Himes have helped
MVNU post an 85-38 record over the past four
years (.691 winning percentage) – the best
four-year span in the program's history. The
team is on the verge of posting its third
20-win season during the four years and the
senior class captured the 2009 National
Christian College Athletic Association
national title. This year's squad is
currently 19-7 overall and trying to earn
the program's first-ever trip to the NAIA
Division II National Tournament.

Kellie Jokela |
Williams, a native of Erie, Pa., is in
her second season as a student assistant for
the Lady Cougars. She is a Business
Administration major and has been a key part
of the team's success the past two years.
"Leah joined our program two years ago and
has been a tremendous blessing to all of
us,” said MVNU coach Steve Gregory. "She has
been a valued student assistant to our
program and has been involved in all
aspects, which has proven invaluable to our
entire coaching staff as well as to the
players. She has been a great student, a
tremendous Christian influence, and a
trusted, integral part of our program.”
Pollock, a 5-foot-10 wing from Mogadore,
Ohio, has played in 86 games over the past
four years and has recorded 557 points (6.5
ppg) and 254 rebounds while ranking ninth in
school history with 122 career 3-pointers
made. After missing her sophomore season due
to medical issues, the former Mogadore High
School product has come back to be a key
contributor and is having her best season
yet as she has played in all 26 games this
year with four starts and is averaging 6.7
points and 2.0 rebounds while tying for the
team lead with 40 treys and shooting 81.8
percent at the free throw line. A Criminal
Justice major, she has posted a 3.69 grade
point average and is up for NAIA and NCCAA
Scholar-Athlete honors for the second
straight year.
"Kelli has been through it all,” said
Gregory. "She is a kid with tremendous
intellect who has been a great shooter for
us over the last four years. While not the
most athletic kid in the world, she has more
than made up for it with her work ethic,
physical play, and knowledge of how to work
hard and smart at the same time. She has
brought good leadership to our team as a
two-year captain while helping to anchor the
team spiritually and making a huge
difference. Her accomplishments on the court
can be seen through our accomplishments over
the years. She has been a great guard who
has constantly improved and will be hard to
replace. She is a very good rebounding guard
with tremendous range. She is equally
talented in the classroom.”
Jokela, a 5-foot-9 forward from Mentor,
Ohio, has played in 117 games over the past
four years and scored 527 points (4.5 ppg)
and grabbed 533 rebounds (4.6 rpg), while
also recording 111 assists and 94 steals
during her career. This season, the former
Mentor High School graduate has played in 21
games with two starts and is averaging 2.5
points and 2.4 rebounds. An Exercise Studies
major, she has posted a 3.77 grade point
average and is up for NAIA and NCCAA
Scholar-Athlete honors along with Pollock
for the second straight year.
"Kellie has given her heart and soul to this
program over the past four years,” said
Gregory. "She has provided good leadership
and has been a captain the last two years.
She has led our program to great success and
has been a model student, athlete, and
Christian during the process. On the court,
nobody outworks Kellie. While it's true she
has been banged up this year with neck and
back issues, It hasn't impeded her will to
prepare. She has been a bit undersized for
her position, but her desire and
determination has allowed her to succeed and
at the same time make those around her
better.”

| Lauren Johnson |
Amanda Himes |
Johnson, a 5-foot-4 guard from Washington
Court House, Ohio, has also played in 117
games over the past four years and scored
903 points (7.7 ppg) while grabbing 183
rebounds and nailing 91 threes. She ranks
fifth in school history with 243 career
steals and ninth with 276 career assists.
This season, the former Miami Trace High
School standout is averaging 10.6 points and
is tied for the team lead with 40 treys.
Johnson has also recorded 59 assists and 61
steals. A Nursing major, she has posted a
3.17 grade point average.
"Lauren has saved her best for last as she
has had a great senior season,” said
Gregory. "She has started at the shooting
guard position for the last two years and
has brought great stability to that spot.
She has always been a great athlete, great
defender, and great slasher, and this year
she has been a tremendous shooter from
outside the 3-point line. She has always
been one of our top playmakers on defense
with her quick hands and feet. She has a
tremendous heart for the Lord and has been
our team ‘mom' in many respects. She has
been a great Christian influence that I've
had the tremendous blessing to have had with
me for four years.”
Himes, a 6-foot-1 center from Hilliard,
Ohio, has posted a record-setting career for
the Lady Cougars over the past four years.
The former Hilliard Darby High School star
ranks first in school history in points
(2,117), scoring average (18.6 ppg), blocked
shots (111), rebounds (1,239), and field
goals made (830) as well as holding six
other single season school records. She also
ranks third in school history in career free
throws made (458). Among her many honors,
Himes is a two-time NAIA Division II
Honorable Mention All-American. This season,
she is averaging 18.2 points and 11.9
rebounds while leading MVNU with 30 blocked
shots in 25 games. She has also had success
in the classroom with a 3.46 grade point
average as an Early Childhood Education
major and will be up for NCCAA
Scholar-Athlete status.
"Amanda has rewritten the MVNU record books
with her tremendous basketball skill and
high IQ for the game,” said Gregory. "She
was blessed with size and tremendous
athletic ability and has not let it go to
waste. Her four-year production as a starter
in our program has produced a lot of wins, a
national championship, and tremendous
success for our team. Like our other
seniors, she has been a great student in the
classroom and on the court. I'm very proud
of what she has accomplished, but I'm more
proud that she is going to get her education
degree and be a phenomenal teacher after her
basketball career is completed. She has been
a tremendous player over the past four years
and an even better person.”
The Lady Cougars, who are currently 19-7
overall and 9-5 in the highly-competitive
AMC, will play in the AMC Tournament
starting on Tuesday night with the location,
time, and opponent still to be determined by
the outcome of Saturday's regular-season
finales around the league.
"This senior group will be a tough one to
part with,” said Gregory. "They have brought
tremendous success to this program including
an NCCAA national championship. More
importantly, they have all been great
students and averaging a 3.5 GPA in their
respective disciplines. Not only have they
been great students, but they have all
exuded a great Christian influence amongst
their teammates and community, while also
being great basketball players. I'm proud of
each and every one of them and wish them
nothing but the very best with their very
bright futures.”
