Cedarville's Riehle to Receive Ron Holmes
Memorial Award
written by Dave Parsons, Sports Information Director
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (2-11-2011) - Adam Riehle,
a member of the Cedarville University men's
basketball team, will be presented with the
American Mideast Conference's Ron Holmes
Award prior to the conference game between
Mount Vernon Nazarene University and the
Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at 4:00
p.m. at the Physical Education Center.
The
Ron Holmes Memorial Award is given each year
by the AMC in honor of the former MVNU
basketball standout who was tragically
killed in a car accident prior to his senior
season in 1991. Holmes, who is regarded by
many as the best player in Cougar basketball
history, was just 418 points shy of becoming
the program's all-time leading scorer. He
still ranks eighth in career points (1,824)
and had the second-best career scoring
average in school history at 18.2 points per
game. He also holds the school records for
free throws made and attempted in both a
season and a career.
The Ron Holmes Memorial Award was
implemented on behalf of the conference
coaches to recognize a player who exhibits
the same outstanding basketball ability,
character, and academic achievements that
Holmes did. The recipient is selected
following his sophomore or junior season,
and the award is presented at a game during
the following year either at MVNU or when
MVNU visits the recipient's team.
Riehle, a 6-foot-3 senior forward from
Edgerton, Ohio, has been a four-year player
and two-year starter for Cedarville. The
former Edgerton High School standout has
played in 121 career games for the Yellow
Jackets and has been a part of three NAIA
Division II National Tournament teams. This
season, Riehle is having his best year yet
as he has started 21 of Cedarville's 25
games and is averaging 8.4 points and a
team-best 6.1 rebounds while shooting 60.4
percent from the field (93-for-154). He was
also a starter on last year's Yellow
Jackets' squad that went 26-9 and advanced
to the NAIA Division II National Tournament
Sweet 16.
In
the classroom, Riehle has posted a 3.67
grade point average as a Comprehensive Bible
major. He was an NAIA and NCCAA
Scholar-Athlete as a junior and will be up
for those honors again this season. He
received the FFA American Degree Award in
the fall of 2009 and the Dr. and Mrs. Duane
R. Wood Award in the spring of 2010.
Riehle has also been very active on
Cedarville's campus and in the community. He
has served as a worship and small group
leader at Elevate Youth Ministry and Ablaze
Junior High Ministry and he went on a
mission trip to Scotland in the summer of
2009. He also spent two summers as a camp
counselor at Woodlands Camp in Cleveland,
Ga. In addition, he is serving his second
year as a resident assistant at Cedarville.
"Adam is one of the finest Christian men I
have had the privilege of coaching,” said
Cedarville coach Pat Estepp. "He has a
tremendous heart for others and most of all
for Christ. In 10 years of coaching, Adam is
one of the two hardest workers I have ever
coached. His toughness and work ethic are
contagious, and most of all so is his love
for Christ.”
Riehle becomes the second Yellow Jacket to
receive this award in its 18th year of
existence. Ryan Short was presented the
award during the 2007-2008 season.
